She recounted the story on her talk show, Sherri, on September 24, 2025. The arrest, unpaid-ticket amount and jail stay are details from Shepherd’s recollection, not independently verified legal records.
Why did Sherri Shepherd go to jail because of the Rapture?
On the September 24, 2025 episode of Sherri, Shepherd said a religion she once belonged to told its members the Rapture was coming and to get their house in order. She said she took that expectation to mean she would not need worldly possessions, so she stopped paying bills and traffic tickets. Us Weekly reported her account of the episode at Us Weekly.
Shepherd recalled that her vehicle registration had been expired for two years and that she had about “$10,000 worth of unpaid moving violations.” She said she failed to appear in court. The world did not end, and police picked her up as she was driving to perform at the Comedy Store in Hollywood. She said she spent eight days in jail. Complex recounted her remarks and quoted her punchline: “The world never ended. I went to jail.” Complex
How much of the story is independently confirmed?
The reported registration lapse, ticket total, failure to appear and eight-day jail stay come from Shepherd’s on-air account as reproduced by entertainment outlets. The available coverage does not provide court or police records independently confirming those details. The $10,000 figure and the duration should therefore be understood as what Shepherd said, not as verified legal findings.

Was this about the September 2025 Rapture prediction?
No. Shepherd was describing an earlier period in her life, not saying she had acted on the prediction circulating in September 2025. Us Weekly and Complex attributed that contemporary prediction to South African pastor Joshua Mhlakela, who said the Rapture would occur on September 23, 2025. Shepherd said she did not believe that specific forecast because she had encountered a similar expectation before.

Complex connected the story to a 2006 Beliefnet interview in which Shepherd discussed leaving Jehovah’s Witnesses and described fearing that she would die and go to hell. That earlier account suggests a wider crisis of belief and despair behind the anecdote; it would be too simple to treat one Rapture prediction as the whole explanation. Complex’s account summarizes that background.
In the 2025 retelling, Shepherd also joked, “I went to jail for eight days and because I fell for the Rapture, I became a hardened criminal.” The line is comic framing of her experience, rather than a description of a criminal conviction.
