Shailene Woodley said she shared only the first page of Melania Trump’s statement after the July 13, 2024, attempted assassination of Donald Trump because she saw it as a message of compassion—not as an endorsement of the statement’s more political second page. She said the post also pushed back against people around her who, in her account, celebrated that the shooter had missed or speculated about a conspiracy.
What Woodley said she shared—and why
After the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Melania Trump released a statement expressing gratitude that her husband had survived and calling for Americans to come together. Axios reported on the statement and its context.

In an interview with Bustle, Woodley said she shared the statement’s first page. She recalled looking at it and thinking, “This is so beautiful.” She described it as “a beautiful message of human compassion,” focused on a husband and father surviving a violent attack.
Woodley said she did not share the second page because she considered it more political. Her explanation was about the part she chose to post and what it meant to her; it should not be read as her endorsing the entire statement or its political appeal.

What prompted her response
Woodley said she had seen people in circles she respected celebrate that the shooter had missed and speculate that the attack was a setup or conspiracy. She said she could not understand people speaking passionately in favor of death. In her account, sharing the first page was a response to those reactions and an expression of compassion.
Those remarks describe Woodley’s account of what she heard from people around her; they do not independently establish what any particular person said. Her original Instagram Story is not independently preserved in the sources cited here, so its contents are described through her interview and contemporaneous reporting.

Did Woodley support the statement’s political message?
Woodley said she posted the first page, not the second, which she regarded as more political. That distinction is central to her explanation: she said the first page’s human message moved her, while she chose not to share the page she saw as political.
