Sean Penn skipped the March 15, 2026, Oscars because large award-show gatherings made him uncomfortable. He was in Ukraine, where he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and later said he had deliberately timed his trip to coincide with the ceremony.
What happened at the 2026 Oscars?
Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, but he did not attend the ceremony. Presenter Kieran Culkin accepted the award on his behalf, according to the Associated Press. The 98th Oscars took place on March 15, 2026.
Why did Sean Penn choose to miss the ceremony?
At a Tribeca Festival conversation with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins on June 5, Penn described the Oscars as a socially uncomfortable setting. ABC News quoted him saying, “That ceremony ‘always represented social discomfort to me,’” and reported that he deliberately arranged his Ukraine trip to coincide with the awards, according to its June 7 report.
Penn also spoke about his discomfort with large groups. The Guardian reported his remark at the conversation: “I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people.”

Where was Sean Penn when he won?
Penn was in Ukraine and met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy around the time of the Oscars. His location and his explanation for missing the ceremony are related but distinct: he was in Ukraine, and he said he timed the visit to avoid attending an event that felt socially uncomfortable. The available accounts do not establish that he skipped the ceremony as a political protest.
