Guthrie returned to NBC’s Today anchor desk after an absence of more than two months, following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. The Associated Press reported that it was her first time back at the anchor desk since the disappearance.

The return was emotional. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that fans wore yellow ribbons and that yellow flowers were displayed behind the studio window.

What the yellow was tied to
The clearest documented explanation is visual. Yellow ribbons and flowers had been left outside Nancy Guthrie’s Arizona residence in tribute, and the same color appeared among supporters at the studio that morning. Guthrie’s dress echoed that color. Reporting that links the two is describing the public tribute around the family; it is not a statement from Guthrie.
What is not established
- Her own reason. None of the coverage reviewed records Guthrie saying she wore yellow to honor the tribute or for any other stated purpose. Describing the color as a deliberate tribute gesture would be an inference, not a reported fact.

Guthrie’s words about returning
In an earlier interview, quoted by the AP, Guthrie described the difficulty of returning to the show: “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness.” She also said, “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not.
