When seven-month-old Clara cried during her mother Trish Faranda’s interview on The Project, host Sarah Harris asked whether the baby could go to her father briefly. The moment, on 22 April 2024, struck viewers as ironic: Faranda was discussing being asked to leave comedian Arj Barker’s Melbourne show after her baby made noise.
What happened during the interview?
Faranda appeared on the Australian current-affairs program The Project two days after the dispute at Barker’s show. When Clara began crying during the live interview, Harris asked: “Maybe she can go to dad for a quick second?” PerthNow reported the exchange. The timing drew attention because Faranda was recounting an incident in which her baby’s noise had become a point of contention at a comedy performance. ABC News described the interview moment as ironic.
Why had Faranda and Clara left Arj Barker’s show?
The earlier incident occurred at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre during the weekend of 20–21 April 2024, amid the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. ABC reported that the show was advertised as strictly for people aged 15 and over. Barker said the baby’s noises were disrupting the performance. Faranda said she felt humiliated by the way she was asked to leave; Barker said he offered her a refund as she departed. Those are their respective accounts, not a single agreed description of the exchange. ABC News reported both accounts and the show’s age restriction.
How disruptive was the baby’s noise?
Accounts of the sounds differ. Faranda described Clara’s noises as gurgling and relatively quiet. An audience member interviewed by The Guardian described crying that disrupted the performance more than once. Without a settled account of the sound or its effect, it would be misleading to present either description as uncontested fact. The Guardian reported the audience member’s account; ABC reported Faranda’s description.

What was the festival’s position on babies at shows?
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival said Barker’s show was independently produced and took place at a venue the festival did not manage. A festival spokesperson said: “Arj is independently produced and at a venue not managed by the festival, however, any interaction between performers and their audiences requires sensitivity and respect.”
The festival also described its general approach at venues it did manage: babes in arms were generally allowed, with parents asked to sit toward the back so they could leave quickly if a baby became noisy. That policy did not establish the rules for Barker’s independently produced Athenaeum performance. ABC News reported the festival’s comments.

Why did the incident become a debate about gig etiquette?
The dispute brought together competing concerns rather than settling a universal rule about babies at comedy shows. Parents, including breastfeeding parents, may face barriers to attending live events; performers and other audience members also expect to hear a show without interruption. Coverage raised questions about how clearly age policies are communicated, how staff or performers handle disruption, and whether venues can make attendance more workable for parents while limiting disturbance. The answers depend on the event’s stated conditions and practical arrangements; the festival’s general policy for its own venues should not be mistaken for a rule governing every show.
