Sabrina Carpenter was not reported to have been required to go pantsless at the 2025 Met Gala. Her custom Louis Vuitton look used a burgundy bodysuit, a cropped blazer and long tails in place of trousers—a deliberate, dandy-inspired take on tailoring that suited the night’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

What Sabrina Carpenter wore

At the Met Gala on May 5, 2025, Carpenter wore a custom Louis Vuitton ensemble credited by the Associated Press as a Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton suit. Vogue described a burgundy bodysuit with ground-skimming tails; its event coverage called the base a unitard and noted the cropped, collared blazer. The outfit had no trousers. Vogue’s interview with Carpenter and the Associated Press’s event report document the look.

Carpenter described its concept to Vogue as “a dramatic take on a dandy tailcoat with an elongated train.” She said it “mixes Savile Row tailoring with Parisian corsetry.” The striped burgundy wool was hand-embroidered and finished with crystal buttons.

Why the look fit the 2025 Met Gala

The gala’s theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and its dress code was “Tailored for You.” The Costume Institute exhibition celebrated Black dandyism, placing style, elegance and tailoring at the center of the evening’s fashion conversation. Vogue identified Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, as a research basis for the exhibition. Vogue’s exhibition background includes Miller’s explanation that a dandy is someone who studies, above all else, to dress elegantly and fashionably.

Against that backdrop, Carpenter’s tailcoat shape and her own dandy reference made the outfit a pointed interpretation of the theme. Its trouser-free silhouette also played with expectations associated with a tailored suit. That is an interpretation of the design and its context, not a documented statement from Carpenter about a personal reason for leaving off trousers. Vogue’s coverage of the look and dress code connects the ensemble to the event’s tailoring brief.

Was Carpenter part of a pantsless trend?

Yes, as a description of the red carpet—not proof that guests shared a motive. Vogue’s event roundup grouped Carpenter with guests including Lisa, Helen Lasichanh, Cynthia Erivo and Charli XCX in looks featuring short shorts or no shorts. The range of outfits shows that her silhouette was part of a broader pantsless or short-bottoms moment at the 2025 gala, but each look should be understood on its own. So, did Sabrina Carpenter “have to” go pantsless?

Available reporting does not establish that she had to, was forced to, or gave a private explanation for wearing the look without trousers. What it does establish is the garment’s design, Carpenter’s description of its tailoring concept and the gala theme it engaged with. “Pantsless” captures the visible styling; “had to” is a hook, not a confirmed reason.
