After criticism, the company’s CEO apologized and said the cited books would be removed. The episode was a dispute over Allstora’s policy for a bookstore that had presented itself as a community for underserved authors—not evidence that RuPaul personally chose the book. Reporting from March 2024 establishes that sequence, but does not verify Allstora’s current operations or catalog.
What was reported about Allstora’s catalog?
Contemporary coverage in early March 2024 reported that Allstora listed Mein Kampf and other controversial titles. The listing drew particular scrutiny because the platform had been described as a bookstore intended to champion underserved authors and create community around their stories. The Advocate and LGBTQ Nation covered the controversy and subsequent response.
Allstora was co-founded by RuPaul, Eric Cervini, and Adam Powell. The reporting attributes the policy reversal and apology to CEO Cervini; it does not establish that RuPaul selected or personally approved any particular title. The issue was the platform’s catalog policy.
Why did Allstora initially say it would carry the books?
Allstora’s reported FAQ said it had chosen to carry all books so readers could study and respond to hateful ideologies. The company also described a community flagging system: titles flagged by users would be marked as contrary to its values, and proceeds from those titles were to support diverse literature and marginalized communities through the Rainbow Book Bus.

The FAQ’s position, as quoted by reality blurred, was: “At Allstora, we believe that the censorship of any book, perspective, or story is incompatible with the survival of democracy.” That was the company’s stated rationale, not an independently established outcome. The cited coverage does not document donation totals or confirm how the proceeds plan was implemented.
What changed after the backlash?
On March 9, 2024, Cervini apologized and announced a reversal. Follow-up reporting said the cited titles would no longer be available, while a flagging option would remain for other books. Cervini accepted responsibility for including the titles, writing, “I’m devastated that I’ve caused Ru’s name to be even loosely associated with hate, and I take full responsibility for the decision to include these books.” LGBTQ Nation reported on the apology and reversal.

Cervini explained the change by distinguishing a library from the bookstore he said he was building: “I wasn’t, in fact, building a library: free, accessible to all, and funded by a government or university, where the principle of free speech is paramount. Rather, I was building a platform to champion underserved authors and create community around their stories.” The distinction framed the decision as a question of a bookseller’s purpose: whether it should carry every title and rely on reader flags and donations, or curate its catalog to reflect its stated mission.
