The title’s “This Was Depressing!” wording comes from a headline for a 2024 CBR interview, but the available interview record does not establish what Perez meant by that phrase, so it should not be treated as a complete quotation or a definitive explanation of her reaction.
What Rosie Perez connected with in Before
ScreenRant reported that Perez’s childhood experience in New York’s foster-care system helped her relate to Denise. That context offers a grounded explanation for why the role could feel close to home: Denise is placed under pressure as she tries to protect Noah, a child in her care. The connection is reported by ScreenRant; it should not be presented as a direct quote from Perez’s CBR interview.
Descriptions of Denise vary: the indexed CBR summary calls her Noah’s adoptive mother, while other coverage describes her as a foster parent. Without the original interview text to resolve that difference, “Noah’s parent” or “guardian” is the most careful description.
What the “This Was Depressing!” headline tells us—and what it doesn’t
The phrase appears in the title of Sam Stone’s CBR interview, indexed as published October 24, 2024. The indexed summary says Perez discussed the personal nature of playing Denise, the emotional intensity of sustaining the role, and the stakes of the series. But the headline alone does not show which part of the story she called depressing, or whether the phrase refers to the role, the subject matter, or something else.

Before is a psychological horror and thriller series centered on Eli, a child psychiatrist played by Billy Crystal. Recently bereaved, Eli becomes involved with Noah, played by Jacobi Jupe, and the boy’s connection to Eli’s past grows more significant as he tries to help him.
