The look was a deliberate distraction, he said—not simply a fashion statement.
Why did Ronaldo get the haircut?
Ronaldo said his groin was hurting and estimated that he was at “60 per cent” before the semifinal. In an explanation reproduced by FIFA in 2017, he recalled that people had been talking about his injury until he arrived at training with the new haircut. Then, he said, the conversation shifted to his hair.
He gave a fuller explanation to ESPN in 2018: the change of subject helped him feel “more calm and relaxed and focused” on training. He also said he was not proud of the haircut itself because it was strange, but considered it a useful way to redirect attention. The 60 per cent figure was Ronaldo’s own estimate, not a medical measurement.
When did he reveal the look?
Ronaldo debuted the haircut shortly before Brazil’s semifinal against Turkey. A contemporaneous Folha Online report from July 9, 2002 said he had come up with it two days before the match. In a later interview reported by CNN Brasil in 2026, Ronaldo described the problem as a small discomfort in his thigh adductor and said the haircut drew attention from both the press and Turkey. That is his account of its effect, not independent proof that it changed the opponents’ preparation.

Was the injury real?
The haircut did not mean Ronaldo was uninjured. His fitness was a major question after a serious knee injury in 2000 kept him out for much of the period that followed. As BBC Sport’s 2022 account describes, he returned to scoring form near the end of the season, and Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari trusted him at the World Cup. Ronaldo’s later description of discomfort before the semifinal fits into that wider recovery story; it does not establish that he was medically at 60 per cent.
What was the haircut inspired by?
Ronaldo later named Cascão, a character from the popular Brazilian Monica’s Gang comics, as his inspiration, according to AS USA’s 2017 report. The style quickly became recognizable beyond the football press: Folha reported that children in Brazil and elsewhere identified with it.

In that 2002 report, Ronaldo said he planned to keep the cut for a while so as not to disappoint those children. His explanation shows how a look introduced as a distraction took on a life of its own with fans.

Brazil beat Turkey 1–0, with Ronaldo scoring the only goal early in the second half, CNN Brasil reported. Brazil then defeated Germany 2–0 in the final, with Ronaldo scoring both goals, according to ESPN. Those results cemented the haircut in World Cup memory, but they do not show that it caused either victory.
