Why Robert Eggers Gave Count Orlok a Mustache in Nosferatu

Robert Eggers gave Count Orlok a mustache as part of a historically framed character design, alongside makeup calibrated to make the vampire look like a dead human.

The big change is Count Orlok’s mustache. Robert Eggers said he imagined Orlok as a Transylvanian nobleman and felt facial hair suited that identity—a deliberate departure from Max Schreck’s familiar appearance in the 1922 film. It was Eggers’s creative judgment about this character, not a claim that every nobleman of the period wore a mustache.

Why does Count Orlok have a mustache?

Eggers explained the choice in an interview with Empire, as reported by GamesRadar. He said, “there’s just no fucking way that this guy wouldn’t have a moustache,” referring to the Transylvanian nobleman he pictured. He also acknowledged that the facial hair changes the earlier screen design, while saying, “I love the way Max Schreck looks too [in Murnau’s original], and it’s a change.”

The mustache is a visible point of difference, but it is not the whole design. Eggers’s explanation connects it to the character’s imagined background: Orlok is presented not simply as a supernatural creature, but as a specific man with a past and a place in the world.

How the makeup makes Orlok look like a dead human

Eggers and special makeup effects designer David White described the work as an effort to portray a dead person rather than apply a generic monster look. In an interview with the Motion Picture Association, Eggers summed up the guiding idea: “He is a dead human.” The team considered how much decay the story called for and which features should remain recognizable. White pointed to mid-17th-century anatomical illustrations as a reference for Orlok’s body.

That approach let the design balance deterioration with character. Orlok needed to look unsettlingly dead, but the makeup also had to remain legible as a human face and body—especially when the film’s lighting and story asked viewers to read him differently.

Subtle details and changing pallor

White described a silver strand running through Orlok’s hair as a restrained detail: “There’s a little whisper of silver that runs through the hair.” The character’s pallor also shifts with the scene. White said Orlok looks especially milky and dead in the sarcophagus, while appearing more sensitive when he is up and clothed.

Why the climactic look is less overtly decayed

The makeup had to work in different kinds of light. Eggers and White discussed camera tests for moonlight and firelight, as well as the concern that bright daylight in the climax could expose the makeup. They also wanted the final scene’s dark-romance quality to register without viewers focusing only on decay. White said the team pulled back rich tones so Orlok could appear strangely more attractive in that moment. The result is a design calibrated to the scene, not a single fixed level of grotesqueness.

How the 2024 Orlok relates to the 1922 film

The 1922 Nosferatu was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Eggers has described his own interest in folk-vampire traditions, where vampires are frightening, putrid corpses rather than the handsome aristocrats common in later popular images. That helps explain why his Orlok’s look is grounded in death and decay, even as the mustache gives the character a more specific historical identity.

The distinction should not be mistaken for a rejection of Schreck’s performance or appearance: Eggers said he loves the original look. The 2024 film instead makes a different set of choices about Orlok’s face, body and historical framing. The available interviews support that comparison at the level of design intent, not a complete shot-by-shot account of how the films reveal or photograph the character.

How period research shaped the wider look

Orlok’s facial hair and makeup sit within a broader period design. Focus Features reports that costume designer Linda Muir studied details of life in 1838 Germany, including household manuals and 16th-century portrait painting. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke described the challenge of photographing dark interiors while balancing tones and costume textures, and of keeping red largely associated with blood. These choices help place the vampire within the film’s world rather than treating him as an isolated makeup effect.
