Downey said Gibson had helped him when work was hard to find
At the 2011 American Cinematheque Award ceremony, Downey recalled that Gibson had cast him in Air America during a period when Downey was struggling with substance use and unable to find work. “I couldn’t get hired and he cast me,” Downey said, according to The Guardian.

TheWrap also reported that Gibson helped Downey secure an insurance bond for the 2003 film The Singing Detective, after Downey’s arrests and imprisonment had made him difficult to insure for film work. That account adds a concrete example of professional support beyond the casting in Air America. TheWrap reported it in 2011.
His 2011 speech was a public act of reciprocity
Downey used his appearance at the ceremony to ask Hollywood to forgive Gibson and let him work. He said: “Unless you are without sin – and if you are, you are in the wrong fucking industry, you should forgive him and let him work.” The Guardian reported that Downey presented his appeal as returning the support Gibson had shown him.

The context matters. Gibson’s reported conduct was serious: The Guardian’s 2011 account said he made antisemitic remarks during a 2006 arrest and described later recordings that included racial slurs and angry outbursts. Downey’s argument for giving Gibson another professional chance was his own judgment; it should not be mistaken for evidence that those remarks were harmless or excusable.
Gibson later said Downey’s gesture mattered to him
In an Esquire interview published in 2024, Gibson recalled Downey’s intervention as “a bold and generous and kind gesture” and said, “I loved him for that,” according to Variety. Variety also described the two as longtime friends and Air America co-stars.

What the public record does—and does not—show
The clearest answer is that Downey publicly stood by Gibson because Gibson had previously helped him professionally when Downey was struggling to get work. Gibson’s 2024 recollection shows that he valued the gesture. Those dated public accounts do not reveal every private reason for their relationship, establish that professional gratitude was its only basis, or independently confirm the status of their friendship in 2026.
