He had come to know Williams as a person as well as through her performance, and he said the cast cried on and off camera.
Why was filming Dying for Sex so painful for Rob Delaney?
Delaney’s explanation was personal: he was watching Williams, whom he knew off screen, portray Molly as she became sick, deteriorated and died. “Watching her get sick and deteriorate and die was very painful because she’s an amazing actress, as we all know,” he said, as quoted in Tommy McArdle’s September 14, 2025, PEOPLE story republished by AOL.
He described the experience as “super painful” and said, “we cried a lot, on and off camera. It was heavy.” His remarks point to the emotional effect of the performance and the bond he had formed with Williams—not simply the demands of playing a role.
How did Delaney cope with the emotional weight?
Delaney said he swam, ran and called friends to decompress. He recalled calling Nick Offerman when acting felt “hard and real” rather than like silly comedy, and asking what Offerman did in that situation. Delaney said Offerman talked him “off a ledge,” according to the September 14, 2025, Yahoo News UK republication.

What did he say about filming intimate scenes?
Delaney also noted the contrast between how intimacy appears on screen and how it is made. “It’s really funny, because it’s intimate appearing on the screen, but then of course when you’re shooting it there’s a grip and a guy with a boom mic and everything and you’re making crazy noises and doing all kinds of stuff,” he said in the same Yahoo News UK report. His comment describes the practical presence of a crew during filming, alongside the emotional intensity he described elsewhere.

The comments were reported after Delaney spoke with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly’s Red Carpet Live show ahead of the 2025 Emmy Awards. The September 2025 PEOPLE story said Dying for Sex had four Emmy nominations for the series and cast that year; that is award context reported at the time, not a current awards tally. Delaney plays a character who has a sexual relationship with Williams’ Molly.
