Dexter’s pursuit of Trinity—and his belief that he could keep his family life separate from his violent one—leaves Rita exposed. The episode turns Dexter’s apparent victory over Arthur into a devastating consequence.
Who killed Rita, and why was she vulnerable?
Arthur Mitchell kills Rita in her home. Dexter returns after killing Arthur and finds Rita dead in the bathtub, with baby Harrison at the scene. The episode establishes who killed her, but it does not reduce the circumstances to one simple mistake: Dexter repeatedly delays killing Arthur while trying to manage the threat alongside his family life. His confidence that he can control both worlds fails.

Executive producer Sara Colleton later summed up the production’s interpretation of Dexter’s responsibility: “He [Dexter] played fast and loose with Trinity, thinking that he would have it all.” Colleton also described one possible reading of Arthur’s motive as an attempt to force Dexter to face who he really was. That is her interpretation, not a fully explained motive stated by the episode.
Why did the writers choose to kill Rita?
The decision was a story choice that developed late in the season, rather than a fate the writers had planned from the outset. Showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips said, “The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable.” He recalled that the writers did not initially know what the finale would be and said, “We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity.” Rita’s death gave the ending a consequence beyond Arthur’s own death and made Dexter’s choices reach into his family life.

Actor Julie Benz said she learned what would happen to Rita shortly before the finale script was distributed. She described the news as difficult in part because she was leaving a cast and crew she had worked with for four years. That account explains the real-world impact on the cast; it does not change what the episode establishes about Rita’s death.
Did Trinity tell Rita that Dexter was a serial killer?
The finale does not establish whether Arthur told Rita about Dexter’s secret. In a post-finale interview, Phillips said the question had not been determined because season 5 had not yet been planned. He added that he thought Arthur probably had not told her. That is Phillips’s view at the time, not confirmation in the episode, so whether Rita knew remains unresolved.

Rita’s death is the cost of Dexter’s attempt to keep his family separate from the danger created by his pursuit of Trinity. He kills Arthur, but doing so does not undo the exposure his choices brought to Rita and Harrison. The ending shifts the story’s focus from Dexter’s apparent win to the harm that his divided life has caused.
The Television Academy’s 2026 retrospective also identifies Arthur Mitchell as Rita’s killer at the end of season four, consistent with the episode’s central reveal. Read the Television Academy retrospective.
