Critics most often objected to the remake’s balance of modernization and fidelity, its shifting tone and visual style, its CGI dwarf characters, and elements of its songs and performances. Those are judgments about the film; the political and cultural disputes around it are a separate part of the story.
Which Snow White are the reviews about?
This is Disney’s 2025 live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated film, directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The distinction matters: critical reviews, audience reactions and public controversy measure different things.

Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus praised Zegler’s performance while faulting what it called the film’s “bashful treatment” of its source material and “dopey stylistic choices.” That is an aggregator’s summary, not a quotation from one critic. The page’s score is also a moving snapshot: it displayed a 39% Tomatometer in a search result accessed October 4, 2026. The Associated Press reported 43% fresh during the March 2025 opening period. Neither figure should be treated as timeless.
What did critics dislike about the film?
The complaints are best understood as a handful of connected disagreements, not ten independent, universally held reasons. A criticism of the tone, for example, can overlap with a complaint about the adaptation’s style.

1. The remake struggled to balance fidelity and change
Some reviewers welcomed giving Snow White more agency and ambitions beyond romance. Others thought the changes pulled attention away from clear storytelling or left the film trying to satisfy viewers who wanted different things from an adaptation. One reviewer in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup said it “just modernizes when it should focus on storytelling.” That is a response to this version of the story, not proof that audiences agree on how a remake should treat the original.
2. The tone and style did not always cohere
Some critics found the film’s mix of approaches jarring. Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh wrote that “the jumble of tones and styles laid atop this basic narrative feels like it’s trying to please everyone and ends up pleasing no one” in a review dated March 29, 2025. Her complaint helps explain how a film can have appealing individual elements yet feel uneven as a whole.
3. The visual design divided reviewers
Some reviews found the sets, costumes or broader visual choices less magical than they expected from a fairy tale. That is an aesthetic judgment, not an objective measurement of production quality. The same choices may work for one viewer and feel unconvincing to another.
4. The CGI dwarf characters raised two different concerns
The dwarf characters were rendered with CGI, and some viewers and critics objected to their appearance. Separately, disability-representation advocates and some performers raised a labor concern: using computer-generated characters could reduce opportunities for actors with dwarfism. Peter Dinklage criticized the project’s initial approach to the story as “backward”; Disney said it consulted members of the dwarfism community and adopted a different approach. These concerns should not be collapsed into a single claim that the effects were objectively poor or that all actors with dwarfism share one view.

5. Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen divided critics
The roundup includes both praise for Gadot’s stylish or intense presence and criticism of her vocal performance, line delivery or the balance between camp and forced acting. It was a mixed response, not a settled verdict on the performance.
6. Some musical numbers did not stick with reviewers
Because the film is a musical reimagining, the songs were an obvious point of comparison. One critic quoted in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup described many numbers as forgettable, with some embarrassing. That describes a reviewer’s reaction; it does not mean every song drew the same criticism.
7. The romance and Snow White’s role changed—and that split opinion
Pre-release comments by Zegler criticized aspects of the original romance, including the prince’s behavior. The remake gives its heroine ambitions beyond finding a romantic partner. Some reviewers considered that update welcome; others found it insufficiently nuanced or thought it created tension between an empowerment-focused story and a fairy-tale romance. The disagreement concerns how the film handled the change, not whether every viewer wants the same kind of heroine.
8. The familiar remake format may have felt limiting
The Associated Press placed the film within wider questions about Disney’s strategy of adapting animated properties as live-action productions. For some critics, that context may make the film feel familiar rather than newly compelling. It is a broader industry concern, not evidence that all Disney remakes fail or that it explains any particular review score.

Did the controversy cause the bad reviews?
There was substantial pre-release debate about Zegler’s casting, her comments about the 1937 film and its romance, the dwarf characters and employment for actors with dwarfism, and political reactions connected to Zegler’s support for Palestine and Gadot’s public support for Israel. The Guardian and Time documented disputes that drew criticism from different political directions.
That controversy helps explain why the film became unusually politicized, but it does not establish that professional critics were politically motivated or that the disputes caused particular scores. No credible quantified causal analysis in the cited reporting establishes how much controversy or review-bombing changed professional or audience ratings.
How should you read the audience and box-office figures?
Commercial performance and an audience grade offer context, not an explanation of what critics disliked. The Los Angeles Times reported the following release-period figures:
| Measure | Reported figure and qualification |
|---|---|
| U.S. and Canada opening | $43 million, studio estimates reported in 2025 by the Los Angeles Times. |
| Overseas opening | $44 million, reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2025. |
| Global opening | $87 million, reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2025; the Associated Press separately reported $87.3 million. |
| CinemaScore | B+, reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2025. |
| Production cost | Estimated at $250 million before marketing, according to the Los Angeles Times in 2025. |
These are opening-period estimates and reported figures, not final worldwide grosses. The B+ CinemaScore reflects an audience grade, not a critic consensus. The gap between a weak critic response and a less severe audience reaction is one reason not to equate a low review score with a universal audience verdict.
So, is Snow White really that bad?
The reviews point to a film whose choices did not work for many critics, especially its handling of the source story, its tonal and visual coherence, and some musical or performance elements. They do not show that every viewer will dislike it: Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus singled out Zegler’s performance, and the roundup includes reviewers who welcomed parts of the modernization or praised Gadot. Whether it works for you will depend in part on what you want from a remake—close continuity with the 1937 film, a substantial reinvention, or a musical fantasy that succeeds on its own terms.
