Red One has a striking split on Rotten Tomatoes: the site lists a 29% Tomatometer from 186 critic reviews and an 89% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 verified ratings. But other audience measures are less uniformly positive, so the gap is best understood as a difference between rating systems—not proof that every viewer liked a film critics disliked.
How large is the critics-versus-viewers gap?
At the time of writing, Rotten Tomatoes lists Red One at 29% on its Tomatometer, based on 186 critic reviews, and 89% on its Popcornmeter, based on more than 5,000 verified ratings. The 60-point difference is substantial, but the percentages measure the share of reviews or ratings counted as positive on that service; they are not average scores on a shared scale. The page can change as new ratings are added. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing also summarizes critics’ response as: “Wrapped in slick packaging but wholly lacking in holiday magic, Red One is a ho-ho-hum action-adventure.” That is the aggregator’s consensus, not one critic’s review.
Why do audience measures tell different stories?
There is no single audience score that represents every viewer. Metacritic lists a user score of 5.7 out of 10 from 258 ratings, while the Associated Press reported that Red One earned an A- CinemaScore from opening-weekend moviegoers. These figures are not directly comparable: Metacritic aggregates user ratings, CinemaScore surveys people leaving theaters, and Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter reflects verified ratings on its own platform.
| Measure | What it shows | Sample and method |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer | 29% positive | 186 critic reviews listed on the page; the score may update. Rotten Tomatoes |
| Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter | 89% positive | More than 5,000 verified ratings listed on the page; the score may update. Rotten Tomatoes |
| Metacritic user score | 5.7 out of 10 | 258 user ratings listed. Metacritic |
| CinemaScore | A- | Reported by the Associated Press for surveyed opening-weekend moviegoers on November 17, 2024. Associated Press |
Taken together, these measures suggest that many verified Rotten Tomatoes users responded more positively than critics represented on that site, but they do not establish a universal audience verdict. The 5.7 Metacritic user score complicates a simple “audiences loved it” reading, while the opening-weekend CinemaScore captures a different group at a different moment.

What might explain the split?
Red One combines a Christmas rescue story with action-adventure comedy. Dwayne Johnson plays Callum Drift, the North Pole’s head of security; Chris Evans plays Jack O’Malley, a bounty hunter drawn into the mission after Santa is kidnapped. Amazon describes the story as a globe-spanning effort to save Christmas. Screenwriter Chris Morgan called the leads “a classic odd couple,” describing the intended contrast rather than guaranteeing that every viewer would enjoy their pairing.
That blend may land differently depending on what someone wants from a holiday movie. A viewer looking for action spectacle, star chemistry, or a broad seasonal adventure may welcome elements that a critic seeking warmth, originality, or a more convincing comedy finds unsatisfying. Those are plausible ways to interpret the format and the score gap, not proven causes: the available rating figures do not show why individual critics or viewers gave their scores.

What the box-office opening does—and does not—tell us
The Associated Press reported that Red One opened to $34.1 million domestically over November 15–17, 2024. AP also described the reported production budget as more than $200 million, with some estimates closer to $250 million. These are historical reported figures, not a final accounting of profitability: the film also had a streaming release, and its distribution context was not the same as a conventional theatrical-only release. Amazon MGM Studios distribution head Kevin Wilson told AP, “We’re really happy with the results,” in the context of discussing the theatrical opening—not as a statement about final profit.
