Jon Voight says the fictional former KGB agent Viktor Petrovich gives Reagan a way to show how Soviet observers interpreted Ronald Reagan—and to let that observer’s outlook change over the course of the film. Voight has described Petrovich as fictional, not as a documented agent who personally tracked Reagan.
Why does Reagan use a KGB agent’s point of view?
Voight’s explanation is that Petrovich offers a Russian point of view on Reagan. In a 2024 Beliefnet interview, Voight said the character interprets events with some understanding of that perspective, so viewers can see “what they thought of Ronald Reagan.” The framing makes the observer—not only Reagan—the lens through which parts of the story are presented.

That is Voight’s account of the storytelling choice. It should not be taken as evidence that a particular real KGB agent followed Reagan or that the film’s portrayal establishes what all Soviet observers thought of him.
Was Viktor Petrovich a real KGB agent?
No. Voight called Petrovich fictional, while saying that people like him were assigned to report on Reagan’s political presence. The Reagan Foundation’s film description likewise presents Petrovich as the former KGB agent whose life becomes linked with Reagan after Soviet observers take notice of him as a Hollywood actor. The character serves as the film’s narrator; the sources do not identify him as a historical individual.

How does Petrovich change during the story?
Voight said Petrovich changes over the course of the picture and his life. In the film’s later-life framing, Voight said, Petrovich is no longer a spy. That character arc gives the narrator a perspective that develops rather than remaining simply an outside observer.
What did Voight use to prepare for the role?
In an August 29, 2024 ComingSoon interview, Voight said he did not research a specific real-life Viktor. He described looking into figures associated with the Soviet Union and focusing particularly on former Soviet spy Yuri Bezmenov. That is an account of Voight’s preparation, not proof that Petrovich was modeled on Bezmenov.

Which version of Reagan is being shown?
The film’s original nationwide US theatrical release was August 30, 2024, according to the Reagan Foundation. The official movie site currently promotes Reagan: Director’s Cut and invites theater buyout requests. A WorldNetDaily report published in October 2026 says the Director’s Cut began returning to theaters on September 25, 2026, with ten minutes of new footage; that added-footage detail is reported by that outlet.
