Maddow framed the comparison as a difference in working styles—not a prediction backed by ratings or audience data.
What Maddow said about Psaki
In the joint interview with People, as quoted by TV Insider, Maddow described Psaki’s people skills as the reason she expected the hour to benefit from Psaki’s presence. “The thing [Psaki] has which I do not have, which is going to make 9 o’clock better with Jen Psaki than it is with Rachel Maddow, is that she both knows people and knows how to talk to people,” Maddow said. TV Insider’s May 7, 2025 report relayed the remark from the People interview.
Maddow also called herself “a reader, not a talker.” She characterized her own approach as relying on reading and her staff, and said she was not naturally as strong at interviewing or cultivating sources. Her praise of Psaki, therefore, was a personal comparison of reporting and hosting strengths—not an independently measured judgment about which presenter performs better.
How the hosts’ schedules changed in May 2025
The interview came as Maddow stepped back from a temporary nightly stretch. TV Insider reported that she had hosted five nights a week during the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second presidency, then returned to hosting The Rachel Maddow Show on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET. Beginning May 6, 2025, Psaki’s The Briefing with Jen Psaki was scheduled for Tuesday through Friday at 9 p.m. ET.

Those are historical schedule details reported in May 2025, not confirmation of MSNBC’s current lineup. The same interview was described in syndicated People search-result framing as the women’s first joint interview as alternating 9 o’clock hosts; that description is secondary corroboration of the interview context.
“Better” was Maddow’s view, not a ratings finding
Maddow’s statement speaks to what she believed Psaki could bring to the hour: an ease with conversation and interviews that complements Maddow’s more reader-centered style. The available reporting does not provide ratings comparisons, audience research or other performance figures showing that the hour became better, however a viewer defines that term.

The distinction matters: an explanation of why Maddow valued Psaki’s skills is not evidence of an outcome. The interview offers Maddow’s assessment of their differences, not a quantified comparison of their impact.

In a later development, the Associated Press reported that MSNBC planned to adopt the name MS NOW as part of its separation from NBC, with the change expected later in 2026. The AP report described a plan rather than an exact implementation date. The 2025 interview and schedule context used the MSNBC name; the planned rebrand should not be retroactively substituted into that account.
