They are two separate jewels—and the available accounts do not establish Camilla’s personal reason for wearing the brooch.
What is Prince Albert’s Brooch?
Prince Albert commissioned the sapphire-and-diamond cluster brooch as a wedding gift for Queen Victoria in 1840. Victoria pinned it to her wedding dress as her “something blue,” according to Garrard, the jeweler that made Diana’s ring. Victoria’s diary described it as “a large sapphire set round with diamonds,” and called it “really quite beautiful,” in a passage reproduced in a publisher-hosted sample.
Garrard’s relationship with the royal family was formalized in 1843, when Victoria appointed the firm Crown Jeweller. The brooch’s royal history therefore predates Diana’s ring by more than a century.
How did the brooch inspire Diana’s ring?
The connection is the design: a central sapphire surrounded by diamonds in a cluster setting. Garrard describes Diana’s engagement ring as a Ceylon sapphire framed by 14 solitaire diamonds, and traces its cluster design to Victoria’s wedding brooch. Garrard’s design and development director Claire Scott put it this way: “Just like Queen Victoria’s sapphire brooch, Princess Diana’s engagement ring features a majestic sapphire and our signature cluster setting.”

Diana’s ring was made by Garrard and offered to her by Charles in 1981. British Vogue describes it as a ring selected from Garrard’s collection rather than a unique, custom-made design. The brooch did not become the ring: the two are distinct objects, linked by their design.

Marie Claire reports that Diana never wore Prince Albert’s Brooch. Another sapphire brooch associated with Diana—a jewel she wore at the center of a pearl choker—is a different piece and should not be confused with Victoria’s wedding gift.

Why did Diana choose the ring?
Published accounts offer different explanations, so no single private motive is established. Vogue presents more than one reported account and quotes jewelry historian Vivienne Becker describing the ring as “totally in tune with her style.” That is Becker’s assessment of Diana’s taste, not proof of why Diana selected it.

Marie Claire reports that Camilla wore Prince Albert’s Brooch during the royal visit to Italy in April 2025. The available accounts document that appearance and the brooch’s history, but do not give Camilla’s personal reason for choosing it on that occasion. Its association with Victoria and the royal collection is clear; a specific political, emotional, or family message is not established.
