The Canada plan was part of a transition announced in January 2020, not a newly confirmed trip. Queen Elizabeth II said the family supported Harry and Meghan’s wish to create a more independent life as a young family, and that they would spend time in both Canada and the UK during the transition.
Why were Harry and Meghan going to Canada?
On 13 January 2020, Queen Elizabeth II announced that the family supported the couple’s wish to build a more independent life as a young family. She said they would remain valued members of the family and did not want to rely on public funds in their new lives. The Queen described a transition period involving time in Canada and the UK, while noting that further decisions still had to be resolved. Her statement did not present Canada as their permanent destination or set out a detailed itinerary.
In the Queen’s words: “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.” She added: “It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.” Read the statement from 13 January 2020.
Was this a permanent move or a new trip?
The 2020 statement described a transition period, not a permanent move to Canada. Harry later joined Meghan and their son Archie in Canada during that transition, as reported at the time by TODAY on 21 January 2020.

The information available here does not confirm that Harry and Meghan are heading to Canada on a new trip in 2026, or provide current dates, purpose, or itinerary. The Royal Family’s press-release listing does not establish that no trip is planned; it simply does not verify a current Sussex itinerary.
How would a royal visit to Canada be classified?
Canada distinguishes an official Royal Tour from other working or private visits. The category depends on how a visit is organized and who invites the royal, so the 2020 plan should not automatically be described as an official tour.
- Official Royal Tour: organized and supported by the Government of Canada.
- Working or private visit: a province, territory, municipality, or organization may invite a royal other than the King; the inviting party bears the associated costs.
The Governor General of Canada’s overview of the Sovereign and Royal Family explains these categories. No current Sussex itinerary is established here, so its classification cannot be stated.

A Public Safety Canada briefing from 2020 said the RCMP was working with UK police after the couple’s arrival in Canada. It described protection as dependent on the nature of a visit, designation by the Minister of Public Safety, and a threat and risk assessment; it also said the couple’s status was due to change in spring 2020. This is historical context, not evidence of their present security arrangements. Read the 2020 Public Safety Canada briefing.
