Why Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football Can Sound Quieter Than the Commercials

Viewers have repeatedly reported quiet Thursday Night Football audio and louder-sounding Prime Video commercials. Here’s how to distinguish a source mix from a TV or surround-system problem, what Dialogue Boost can do, and why the CALM Act generally does not cover streaming.

Yes, Prime Video viewers have repeatedly reported that Thursday Night Football (TNF) commentary or overall game audio sounds much quieter than the commercials. Amazon forum staff have acknowledged similar complaints and suggested checking a television’s audio normalizer, but Amazon has not publicly established that every TNF broadcast has a defective mix or that ads are intentionally made louder. User reports also vary by device, app, region and sound system.

For U.S. viewers, the federal CALM Act does not currently cover internet streaming services such as Prime Video. The most useful response is therefore to test your playback setup, document a repeatable example and report it to Amazon rather than assume a proven regulatory violation.

What viewers may be hearing

“The volume is too low” can describe several different problems:

  • The whole game is quiet: you raise the volume for TNF, then lower it when an ad break starts.
  • Announcers are quiet: crowd and field effects remain strong, suggesting a dialogue or center-channel imbalance.
  • Commercial transitions are startling: the game sounds restrained, while an advertisement remains consistently prominent.

Complaints in Amazon’s customer forums include commercials sounding louder than surrounding programming (Amazon forum discussion and a later thread). Reddit viewers have separately described quiet TNF audio and possible surround-sound or center-channel problems (viewer report; another report). These are useful patterns, not measurements proving a league-wide production fault.

Why a commercial can sound louder

Average loudness is not the same as peak level

Peak level is a brief maximum. Average or integrated loudness describes the perceived level over time. Dynamic range is the distance between quiet and loud passages. Compression and limiting reduce that distance, keeping speech, music and effects near a steady level.

A live game contains quiet commentary, changing crowd ambience, field microphones and occasional peaks. An advertisement may be heavily compressed, so it stays consistently forceful. It can therefore sound louder even when a simple peak reading does not show an extreme difference. The FCC’s 2025 proposed rulemaking discusses complaints about loud commercials and the limits of judging loudness by maximum level alone (FCC proposal; Federal Register publication).

Amazon’s audio-ad specifications call for intelligible voiceovers and appropriate loudness (Amazon audio-ad specifications), but that document does not establish how a particular advertisement compares with a particular TNF feed. It is not evidence that Amazon deliberately boosts every commercial.

Surround decoding can hide the announcers

Many sports feeds use multichannel audio. In a correctly configured 5.1 system, announcer dialogue is often concentrated in the center channel. A weak, muted or incorrectly calibrated center speaker can make commentary seem quiet while the stadium remains loud. A receiver’s upmixing mode, speaker calibration or HDMI ARC/eARC passthrough can create a similar imbalance.

Device processing differs

Televisions, soundbars, receivers, streaming sticks, consoles and headphones may apply different volume offsets, Dolby decoding and dynamic-range processing. A TNF stream that sounds balanced through built-in TV speakers can sound wrong through a receiver, and the reverse can also happen.

A five-minute troubleshooting sequence

  1. Note the volume setting during the game. When an ad starts, lower the volume and restore it when play resumes. This confirms a transition problem but is not a permanent fix.
  2. Open your audio settings. Look for Auto Volume, Volume Leveling, Night Mode, Reduce Loud Sounds, Dynamic Compression, Clear Voice or Dialogue Enhancement. Names and menu paths differ by model; enable the least aggressive suitable option.
  3. Test the television’s internal speakers. If speech becomes balanced, investigate the soundbar or receiver rather than the stream first.
  4. Temporarily select PCM or stereo. Change Dolby, bitstream or passthrough to PCM/stereo on the TV or streaming device. If announcers improve, inspect the center-channel level, speaker wiring, calibration and receiver sound mode. Restore your preferred surround format after testing if stereo reduces desired quality.
  5. Compare another playback route. Try the TV’s Prime Video app, a Fire TV device, Roku, Apple TV, game console, web browser, headphones or Bluetooth output. One-device failures usually point to that app, device or HDMI path.
  6. Record precise symptoms. Note whether only announcers, the entire game or the advertisements change, along with the game date and approximate time.

Use Dialogue Boost only when it is offered

Prime Video’s Dialogue Boost raises dialogue relative to music and effects, with Medium and High settings on eligible titles. Amazon describes it as a title-dependent option in the in-player audio menu (technical description; consumer explanation; device instructions).

It is not documented as a control for every live event. If Dialogue Boost is absent during TNF, the event or device likely does not support it. Use your television or receiver’s voice-enhancement setting and test stereo output instead. Dialogue Boost is intended to improve speech relative to program audio; it is not a commercial-break loudness normalizer.

How to tell whether the source or your equipment is responsible

Pattern Most useful next checks
Only announcers are quiet; crowd is strong Dialogue enhancement, center-channel level, stereo/PCM test, receiver calibration and TV-speaker comparison.
Entire game is quiet; ads seem normal Compare devices, enable volume leveling, test audio formats and check for a live-content volume offset.
Only commercials jump in loudness Auto-volume or night mode, a documented recording and an Amazon report.
Problem occurs only through a soundbar or receiver Center speaker, speaker configuration, HDMI ARC/eARC, passthrough and surround-mode settings.
Problem occurs on every device tested That strengthens the case for a source-feed or ad-insertion issue, but does not prove intentional manipulation. Timestamps and repeatable recordings provide stronger evidence.

How to measure the difference without overstating it

For a useful comparison, record the same game segment and commercial from the same listening position and compare an announcer passage, crowd passage and advertisement with an audio editor or loudness meter. Integrated or perceived loudness is more informative than waveform peaks alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A phone microphone is not a calibrated loudness meter.
  • The game mix can change during a broadcast, and inserted advertisements may differ by viewer.
  • A room recording tests your television and room, not necessarily the Prime Video source feed.
  • Speaker placement, equalization, hearing and compression settings affect perception.

Label any result by game, date, device and audio mode; it cannot establish what every TNF broadcast does.

What the CALM Act covers—and what it does not

The U.S. Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act addresses commercial loudness on traditional television distribution. FCC materials state that streaming services are outside the current framework (FCC consumer guidance). The FCC’s 2025 proceeding sought comment on continuing loud-commercial problems in broadcast, cable and satellite television; it did not create a general streaming-volume rule.

Watching a Prime Video stream on a television, Fire TV device or other hardware does not automatically turn that internet stream into a regulated broadcast or multichannel video-programming channel. You can still report a poor experience to Amazon. An FCC CALM complaint may not provide the same remedy for a Prime Video stream; the FCC’s complaint information is at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.

How to report the problem to Amazon

Amazon’s forum guidance specifically suggests checking audio normalization and sending device-specific feedback (forum guidance). Use the Prime Video feedback page at amazon.com/gp/video/feedback and include:

  • Whether announcers, crowd, all game audio or only advertisements are affected.
  • Whether stereo, TV speakers or another device changes the result.
  • A short recording from the listening position, where appropriate and lawful.

A report such as “The announcer channel is quiet while commercials are substantially louder; switching from Dolby passthrough to stereo improves it” is more actionable than “ads are too loud.”

When additional equipment may help

Buy equipment only after the configuration tests. A soundbar with a clearly labeled voice mode can help weak TV speakers, but it cannot repair a bad source mix and may introduce its own surround imbalance. A receiver or dedicated center speaker can improve commentary in a properly calibrated system, yet a muted or misconfigured center channel will make matters worse. Headphones can improve direct speech intelligibility for late-night viewing, although commercial jumps may feel more abrupt and Bluetooth can add live-sports delay.

Examples to evaluate on official manufacturer pages include Sonos home theater, Bose TV speakers, Samsung soundbars, Denon AV receivers, Yamaha AV receivers, Apple AirPods, Bose headphones and Sennheiser TV headphones. These products are options, not guaranteed fixes, and no current prices are established here.

Verdict

The quiet-TNF/loud-commercial complaint is genuine and recurring, but a universal Prime Video production defect and intentional ad boosting are not publicly proven. Start with volume leveling or night mode, TV-speaker and stereo/PCM tests, and center-channel checks. If the mismatch survives different devices and settings, send Amazon a timestamped, technically specific report. Treat the CALM Act as a traditional-television rule, not a guaranteed remedy for an internet stream.
