In an interview published that April, Chicago founding member Robert Lamm said Cetera had proposed bringing his own band to perform a Chicago song. Lamm described the disagreement as a misunderstanding about an honor meant for Chicago as a band; the available reports do not establish Cetera’s own reason for skipping the ceremony.
What happened at the 2016 induction
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame lists Chicago as a 2016 inductee in the Performer category. The Hall’s Chicago profile and its 2016 Induction page document the band’s place in that year’s class. Contemporary coverage reported that Cetera would skip the event, despite earlier expectations that he might perform. The Chicago Sun-Times report was published February 9, 2016.

What Robert Lamm said about the disagreement
In an interview published April 4, 2016, by Ultimate Classic Rock, Lamm said Cetera had proposed bringing his own band to perform a Chicago song. Lamm put it this way: “He was proposing to bring his band to play when he sang a Chicago song.”
Lamm framed the tension as a misunderstanding over what the induction recognized: in his account, the honor was for Chicago as a band, not an individual member. That is Lamm’s interpretation of the dispute, not independent evidence of what Cetera thought or why he chose not to attend.

What is—and is not—established about Cetera’s reason
The contemporary report establishes that Cetera did not participate, and Lamm’s interview records his account of the proposed performance and the disagreement. The cited material does not include a direct explanation from Cetera for his absence. It therefore supports describing what Lamm said, but not presenting Lamm’s interpretation as Cetera’s confirmed motive.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile describes Chicago’s career and records several scale-of-career figures. It says the band issued thirty-six albums over a forty-six-year recording career, sold well over 100 million records, and had twenty Top 10 pop singles and twenty-two Top 10 adult contemporary singles. The Hall also says seventeen of the band’s first twenty albums were certified platinum. The profile does not specify a reference year for these statistics, so they should be understood as figures reported on that page, not as newly measured totals.
