The City of Perth ended the large-scale Australia Day Skyworks over the Swan River after 2022, but it did not end its Australia Day event. From 2023, the replacement was a smaller fireworks-and-drone event at Langley Park. The City was still staging an event there in 2026.
Why was Perth Skyworks cancelled?
In April 2022, Perth councillors agreed to replace the large river display with a more modest event at Langley Park from 2023. Contemporary reporting linked the decision to the cost of the event, its return for ratepayers, attendance and changing community interest—not to one stated reason alone.
PerthNow reported that the City planned to reduce its spending from $2.5 million for the 2022 event to $740,000 for 2023. Those were planned figures reported in 2022, not current budgets or final audited expenditure. The report also quoted a City statement saying it had reviewed the 26 January celebrations and refocused resources on activity across summer to provide a greater return to ratepayers. ABC News described the change in the context of high costs and waning interest.
What replaced the Perth Skyworks?
The first replacement event took place in 2023 at Langley Park. Rather than the former large fireworks display over the Swan River, it featured drones alongside a smaller fireworks show. The change was therefore a shift in both scale and format, not simply a new name for the old river spectacle.

|---|---|---|
| Location and scale | Large fireworks display over the Swan River. The City described Skyworks as established in 1986. (City of Perth council agenda, 2020) | Smaller event at Langley Park from 2023. (ABC News, 2023) |
| Display format | Fireworks display. (PerthNow, 2022; ABC News, 2023) | Drones and fireworks. (ABC News, 2023; City of Perth, 2026) |
| City spending | $2.5 million planned for 2022, as reported by PerthNow in 2022; not a final audited figure. | $740,000 planned for 2023, as reported by PerthNow in 2022; not a final audited figure. The City’s 2025–2026 Events Plan lists $1.2 million as the total cost for the 26 January 2026 event; this is a plan figure, not final audited expenditure. |
| Attendance | The City’s 2020 council agenda recorded patronage of 250,000 for 2019/20 and described typical attendance in the preceding years as 250,000–300,000, with an estimated peak of 400,000 around 2009. | The City reported more than 150,000 attendees across the City in 2026. That figure covers a different event footprint and year, so it is not directly comparable with the historical Skyworks estimates. |
Are there still Australia Day fireworks in Perth?
Yes. The City continued to hold an Australia Day event at Langley Park after the river Skyworks ended. For 2026, the City advertised an 8:30 pm light show and later reported that attendees saw fireworks and a drone display. Its figure of more than 150,000 people is the City’s reported attendance across the City, not an independently audited count.
