The sisters often spoke the same words together. Their synchronized delivery—not the frightening incident itself—became the clip’s striking feature.
What happened to the twins’ mother?
In the sisters’ account, their mother Helen came across an armed man after a carjacked vehicle crashed on Steve Irwin Way. She tried to help, was threatened, and escaped. News reports said Helen, Paula and Bridgette were safe. These details reflect the family’s account as reported by the outlets; they should not be taken as independently verified police findings. The People account, hosted by Yahoo, described the incident and interview as taking place on April 21, 2025: People/Yahoo’s report.
Why did the interview attract attention?
As the twins told the story, they repeatedly spoke in unison, sometimes finishing or repeating each other’s words. That synchronized delivery stood out in the interview and helped it circulate beyond the original local-news audience. The unusual element was how Paula and Bridgette spoke together, not the violence their family described.
The behavior was not new to viewers familiar with the sisters. ABC’s coverage has noted that they often speak in unison, including before this interview. Neither that reporting nor the interview establishes a clinical explanation for it, so it should not be treated as a diagnosis or reduced to a performance.

Who are Paula and Bridgette Powers?
The identical sisters are widely known as the Twinnies and run Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Their wildlife work predates the viral interview. ABC has described how their connection with Steve Irwin helped shape their rescue work, while 7NEWS has reported on the Landsborough seabird rehabilitation centre.
ABC reported on May 12, 2025, that the sisters estimate they rescue about 1,000 birds each year. The same report put the facility’s annual power and bird-feed costs at $75,000. Those are the sisters’ estimate and the reported operating cost, respectively—not independently audited totals.

Why the story is more than a viral clip
The interview joined two very different stories: a family’s account of a frightening roadside encounter and the long-running wildlife work that has made the Twinnies known in Queensland. Focusing only on the synchronized speech risks turning the sisters into a novelty. Their rescue work is a substantial part of who they are, while the incident remains a reported account of a threatening event.
Paula and Bridgette themselves described the interview as tragic and expressed sympathy for those affected and their families. Their reaction underscores the distinction between the way the interview spread and the distressing events it recounted.
