What happened in Cametá
The Festival de Verão da Diversidade was scheduled to take place in Cametá, in the Brazilian state of Pará, and to feature Pabllo Vittar alongside LGBTQIA+ artists. On July 29, 2023, UOL reported that the Pará Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPPA) had appealed for the event to be suspended and that an appellate judge granted the appeal on Friday, July 28. The ruling stopped the festival as a whole, rather than merely removing Vittar from an otherwise continuing program. UOL’s report on the suspension quotes Cametá’s mayor describing the festival’s aim as combating prejudice.
What reason did the prosecutor’s office give?
According to UOL’s account of the proceedings, the MPPA’s request pointed to public spending on the festival and Cametá’s emergency status after heavy rains. The report says a judge initially rejected a request grounded in concerns about public expenditure, but an appellate judge later granted the appeal.
UOL quoted the appellate judge as saying the emergency decree had a validity period of “180 months,” and that Cametá therefore remained under an emergency situation incompatible with an artistic event requiring considerable financial expenditure. That is the duration as reported in the article; the report does not establish that the decree or court order was independently examined here. The legal rationale described by UOL was therefore about the municipality’s circumstances and public resources, not a court finding that the singer should be barred.

Where the boycott framing comes from
POPLine reported that Vittar’s fee was R$421,000 and characterized conservative politicians’ objections that it was too high for the municipality as a boycott. The figure is a reported contractual fee; the cited coverage does not show that the amount was paid or independently verify the contract. POPLine’s report supplies the fee figure and boycott characterization.
That political criticism forms part of the story, but it should be distinguished from the grounds UOL attributes to the MPPA’s appeal and the appellate decision. The available reporting describes a dispute involving public spending, the emergency declaration, and political objections; it does not establish that the boycott framing was the sole or legal cause of the festival’s suspension.

What Pabllo Vittar and the judges said
Vittar publicly confirmed the cancellation and suggested prejudice was involved. POPLine reproduced her post: “Filhas, como vocês viram, o show que aconteceria amanhã no Festival de Verão da Diversidade de Cametá foi cancelado. Algumas coisas saem do nosso controle e nesse caso sabemos bem o nome disso, né? Mas queria agradecer aqui ao prefeito e Prefeitura de Cametá que lutam do nosso lado para uma sociedade diversa e igualitária. Não vamos nos ver esse final de semana, mas vamos trabalhar juntos para que nosso encontro seja o mais rápido possível! Amo vocês!”
UOL also reported that the judge who initially denied the request wrote, “Não pode ir ao encontro de eventual preconceito” (“It cannot give way to possible prejudice”). This was that judge’s stated view in the earlier decision; the later appellate ruling, as UOL reported it, relied on the emergency decree and public expenditure.
