Osgood Perkins kept *Keeper*’s plot under wraps because the film’s teaser was designed to suggest a theme, not explain a story. He said its women from different periods point to the way relationship troubles recur across time. The film itself is a relationship horror story about a couple at a remote cabin, where private doubts meet an uncanny threat.
What *Keeper* is about
The Japanese official film site describes Liz (Tatiana Maslany), an urban artist, and Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), her doctor boyfriend, heading to a remote cabin for their first anniversary. Liz begins experiencing strange visions. When Malcolm is called to the hospital the next day, she is left alone with the growing sense that something in the house is wrong. The official synopsis gives that setup without disclosing the film’s later turns.
Perkins has called it a “relationship horror movie”: the couple’s weekend brings their doubts about one another into contact with a danger beyond their insecurities. That description helps explain why the marketing could hint at the film’s emotional territory while keeping its plot opaque. In an Inverse interview, Perkins framed the cabin story in those interpersonal terms.
What the teaser’s women across time mean
At San Diego Comic-Con, Perkins said the teaser’s women from different periods were meant to suggest that love and relationships repeat familiar troubles over time: “If it’s supposed to say anything, it’s supposed to sort of say like, love through time or relationships through time are essentially the same.” He did not describe the image as a literal account of the plot. CinemaBlend’s 31 July 2025 interview records both the thematic explanation and the teaser’s deliberate lack of plot detail.

Perkins also rejected fan interpretations that the teaser showed time travel, a *Presence*-style point of view, or someone watching people. The image is better read as an atmospheric statement about recurring relationship dynamics than as a puzzle whose answer reveals the film’s narrative.
Why the secrecy suits the film
Perkins did not lay out a complete marketing strategy in the cited interviews. What he did explain is that the teaser was meant to say something about relationships across time, while the film’s story concerns a couple’s doubts and a threat that is both interpersonal and supernatural. It is reasonable to infer that withholding plot details lets viewers encounter the movie through mood and theme rather than having its uncanny developments explained in advance; that is an interpretation of his remarks, not a stated campaign rationale.

The approach also leaves room for the film’s central metaphor. The Japanese official site quotes Perkins describing a man who has behaved badly for a long time as the kind of monster that belongs in a horror movie. He also said he wanted to take some responsibility for the ways men behave badly. Those comments connect the horror to harmful masculinity and patriarchy, without turning the teaser into a synopsis. The official site’s interview material includes both statements.
How Liz’s perspective shapes the horror
Maslany described Liz as sensing danger but struggling to trust that knowledge, and as feeling alone in the relationship. The official Japanese site gives her comment in English translation: “Her body knows something, but (her mind) can’t believe it.” That tension makes the threat personal as well as supernatural: Liz’s unease is present before she can fully account for it.

The same site notes that many of the creatures were created with visual effects, rather than being mostly practical makeup, and names VFX artist Edward Douglas, who also worked on *The Monkey* and *Longlegs*. This is production context, not evidence that the teaser’s images should be read literally.

*Keeper* was filmed in Vancouver during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, while production on *The Monkey* was interrupted. Perkins said he wanted to continue working with the creative team he had assembled after *Longlegs*. With *The Monkey* paused, he and his collaborators developed *Keeper* with Canadian writer Nick Lepard around a single cabin location and a cast and crew not directly affected by the strikes. The Japanese official site places the shoot in Vancouver during the strikes; Perkins’s Inverse interview explains the production sequence and his reason for moving ahead.
