Oprah Winfrey asked Stedman Graham to stay in the couple’s guest house after he returned from work travel in March 2020. She said the precaution reflected his recent flights and her recent recovery from pneumonia and a bronchial infection—not a report that Graham had COVID-19. After about 14 days apart, the couple reunited in early April and shared their first dinner together in two weeks.
Why Stedman stayed in the guest house
During an Instagram Live conversation in March 2020, Winfrey explained that Graham had been traveling for work. He had spoken in St. Louis and arrived from Chicago, according to the Los Angeles Times. Winfrey said she wanted him to stay separately because he had been on planes and she had recently recovered from pneumonia and a bronchial infection.
The separation was described in contemporaneous coverage as a precautionary quarantine. The reports do not say Graham had COVID-19; the Entertainment Tonight report states that he did not have it.
How they kept in touch during the separation
Graham stayed in the guest house for about 14 days. Winfrey and members of the household brought him meals and spoke with him from outside a window, according to Oprah Daily. Winfrey summed up the household rule this way: “The procedure is…you ain’t coming and sleeping in my bed!” The outlet also quoted her saying Graham was “happy to keep me safe.”

The reunion in early April 2020
After the quarantine period ended, Winfrey and Graham reunited with a hug and had their first dinner together in two weeks, Oprah Daily reported on April 1. Entertainment Tonight covered the reunion on April 3. The reports establish the reunion as occurring in early April; their publication dates do not establish its exact day.
Entertainment Tonight quoted Graham responding, “I appreciated you before!” after Winfrey asked whether the time apart had made him appreciate them more.
