Five passed on an early version with a rap chorus, and songwriters Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze and Andreas Carlsson reworked it for *NSYNC.
Why was “Bye Bye Bye” first offered to Five?
The song began with Lundin, Schulze and Carlsson writing for Five. The early version was notably different from the familiar *NSYNC hit: it had a rap chorus. Carlsson later recalled that Five did not connect with it. In his words, “In its first rendition, it had a rap chorus and 5ive did not feel that song whatsoever.” Entertainment Tonight reports Carlsson’s account; Schulze also said Five opted not to record the song. Carlsson said the mismatch was about the group’s direction: “5ive wanted to be a rap band, so ‘Bye Bye Bye’ was not a good match for them.” He also recounted that one member called security and left for the airport after hearing the early version. That vivid detail is Carlsson’s retrospective anecdote, not an independently verified account.
How did the song change before *NSYNC recorded it?
After Five passed, the writers reworked the song for *NSYNC. The change was not simply a matter of handing over a finished recording: the accounts describe an early pitch and later revision. *NSYNC was hesitant about the rap chorus too, and Schulze said the Cheiron team ultimately developed a different chorus rather than keeping the rap section. The available accounts do not give a date for the pitch or rewrite, or document a complete demo-to-recording comparison. Schulze’s account Carlsson’s account

Who wrote “Bye Bye Bye,” and what inspired it?
The reported songwriters are Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze and Andreas Carlsson; *NSYNC did not write the song. The songwriting credits and Carlsson’s recollections
Carlsson has said Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” prompted the team to try an R&B direction, even though the song developed into something else. He has also connected its breakup lyrics to a girlfriend who left him. Those details are his retrospective descriptions of the writing process, rather than independently established accounts of every creative decision.

How did the song become an *NSYNC hit?
*NSYNC released “Bye Bye Bye” as the lead single from No Strings Attached. Jive Records released the album on March 21, 2000, following the group’s 1997 self-titled debut. Album and release information
The song later became associated with *NSYNC’s independence from manager Lou Pearlman. That later meaning should be kept separate from its origin: the song was written by outside songwriters before it became part of the group’s public story. Carlsson’s account and songwriting information

No. The accounts identify Five/5ive as the intended first act. Five passed on an early rap-chorus version; the writers then revised it for *NSYNC. The sources do not identify Backstreet Boys as the original recipient.
