She was not announcing that she was leaving CBS News. CBS described the new job as senior correspondent, with more opportunity for storytelling and major interviews.
What Norah O’Donnell announced
O’Donnell said the change would take effect after the 2024 election. She continued anchoring CBS Evening News and leading the network’s political coverage through the election, as CBS had said she would. Her announcement concerned her anchor and managing editor roles, not her departure from the network.
In her July 30, 2024 message, O’Donnell said: “After this year’s election, I’ve decided I will be leaving my role as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News to take on a new position at the network.” CBS News also reported the announcement.
Why was she leaving the anchor role?
O’Donnell described the move as her decision to take on a different position at CBS. Wendy McMahon, then president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, said the new role would let O’Donnell do more storytelling and major interviews. Those are the public explanations; the available statements do not establish a separate private motive.

CBS described O’Donnell’s new position as senior correspondent. McMahon characterized it as an opportunity to do “more of the storytelling and big interviews that are a hallmark of CBS News, as well as Norah’s illustrious career.” CBS’s announcement set out the network’s description of the role.
Who was announced as her successor?
The plan announced in August 2024
On August 1, 2024, CBS named John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois as the planned post-election anchors. The network also said the broadcast would return to the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. That was the succession plan announced at the time, not a lasting description of the lineup.

The later lineup update
In December 2025, the Associated Press reported that Tony Dokoupil had been appointed to replace Dickerson and DuBois. The 2024 announcement and the later appointment are different points in the program’s succession timeline; the original co-anchor plan should not be mistaken for the current lineup.

The announcements establish that O’Donnell was moving to a senior correspondent position after the 2024 election. They do not establish her complete CBS title and responsibilities as of October 7, 2026. Without a current official CBS biography or announcement, a more specific description would go beyond what these sources confirm.
