Noah Schnapp has faced two distinct waves of public criticism: one in 2022, after he posted private messages from Doja Cat, and another in 2023–24 over his comments about the Israel-Hamas war and a video featuring political stickers. Both episodes brought online backlash, but the available reporting does not show that Schnapp lost a job, was removed from a role, or was actually canceled by the entertainment industry.
What happened in the 2022 Doja Cat controversy?
In July 2022, Doja Cat privately asked Schnapp to connect her with his Stranger Things co-star Joseph Quinn. Schnapp shared screenshots of their direct messages on TikTok. Doja criticized him for making the private exchange public; Schnapp deleted the post and later said he had apologized and that there were “no hard feelings.” The episode sparked online discussion, and Doja also faced backlash after criticizing Schnapp, who was 17 at the time. The Los Angeles Times reported on the exchange and its aftermath.
This was a privacy dispute, not evidence that Schnapp’s career was close to ending. A reported change in his social-media following during the episode does not establish lasting professional impact.
Why did Schnapp face backlash in 2023 and 2024?
The later controversy concerned the Israel-Hamas war and was distinct from the 2022 dispute. After Schnapp made statements in October 2023 following the Hamas attack, some fans criticized him and called for a boycott of the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, according to Teen Vogue.

A video that circulated in November showed Schnapp at a restaurant with other people holding stickers reading “Zionism is sexy” and “Hamas is ISIS.” The Times of Israel reported on the video and the criticism, while noting that it was unclear who had first posted it. The reporting does not establish that Schnapp created or distributed the stickers, so the video should not be treated as proof that he did.
What did Schnapp say in response?
In a TikTok statement posted January 15–16, 2024, Schnapp said he felt his views had been “misconstrued.” He expressed a desire for peace and safety for innocent people affected by the conflict, and referred to both hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian civilian deaths. TheWrap quoted him saying, “I only want peace and safety and security for all innocent people affected by this conflict.” TheWrap’s account of his response also quoted his remarks about talking with friends from a Palestinian background and learning from those conversations.

That statement clarified how Schnapp said he viewed the conflict. Calling it a complete apology for a specific act would go beyond the quoted wording.
Were the two controversies the same kind of incident?
| Episode | What prompted criticism | What reporting attributes to Schnapp | Documented outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 2022 | Sharing private messages with Doja Cat | He posted the screenshots, deleted the TikTok, and later said he had apologized. | Online discussion and criticism; no reported lost role or other career consequence established in the cited account. |
| October 2023–January 2024 | War-related statements and a circulating video showing people with political stickers | His earlier statements and later response are reported; the source does not establish that he created or distributed the stickers. | Online criticism and calls by some fans to boycott the upcoming Stranger Things season; no reported lost role or other career consequence established in the cited accounts. |
The first episode centered on disclosing a private exchange. The later one involved political speech, symbolism, and disagreement over the war. The difference matters: the sticker video’s contents cannot automatically be attributed to Schnapp, while the 2022 message screenshots were posted by him.
Was Noah Schnapp actually canceled?
“Nearly canceled” is a description of intense public backlash, not a confirmed career outcome in this case. The cited reports document criticism and, in the later episode, boycott calls. They do not establish that Schnapp lost a job, was removed from Stranger Things, or experienced an industry-wide career cancellation. Nor do they establish the breadth of audience opinion or whether boycott calls changed viewing figures.
