It was not the only explanation: in 2017, Dobrev said she had planned to leave and wanted new roles and creative challenges.
What Dobrev said about pay and workload
In Highfill’s I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, Dobrev described seeking fair compensation and pay parity with male co-stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. Us Weekly reported her account on September 9, 2025, and TVLine also covered the oral history.
Dobrev said her contract covered Elena, while playing multiple characters—especially Katherine Pierce—increased the work involved. As quoted by TVLine, she said: “I had to be on set for double the amount of time, I had to memorize double the amount of lines.”
She also described feeling that the compensation did not recognize that work. Us Weekly quoted her saying: “I needed to be paid parity to the boys.” Those remarks explain her perspective; the reporting does not provide payroll records or independently verified salary amounts.

Why the finale return involved another pay discussion
Dobrev returned for the series finale in 2017. In the oral-history account, she said she insisted on pay parity before agreeing to return. Us Weekly quoted her describing the offer for the episode as “five times less” than what she had earned while on the show. That is her attributed comparison, not a documented salary figure; no underlying contract or dollar amounts were reported.
How her earlier explanation fits
In 2017, Dobrev described leaving as a planned career move. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, she said she wanted adult roles, challenging work and opportunities to work with filmmakers. ABC News quoted her: “That was the plan from the get-go.”

That earlier explanation and her later account of pay concerns are not mutually exclusive. Together, they suggest she wanted to move on creatively while also believing her expanded workload warranted fairer compensation.

- 2015: Dobrev left after the sixth season. In an Instagram statement quoted by TVLine, she said she had always wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure.
- 2017: She returned as Elena for the series finale.
- September 2025: Us Weekly reported her pay-disparity account from Highfill’s oral history.
The oral history also includes creator Julie Plec’s recollection that writers were told not to include Katherine scenes because Dobrev had to be paid for both roles. Us Weekly reported that recollection; it should not be treated as independently documented studio policy. The same report described Dobrev, Candice King and Kat Graham as among the lowest-paid series regulars in the show’s first two seasons, but did not provide independently audited payroll data. It also said former CW president Mark Pedowitz did not comment on Dobrev’s pay.
