Netflix has a different catalogue in each country, so a title available at home may be missing while you travel. The cause may be regional licensing, a release date, profile settings or Netflix detecting a VPN or the wrong location. Those causes call for different fixes: device settings can help with some display problems, but they cannot make a title available where Netflix does not have the rights.
Why Netflix catalogues differ by country
Netflix says each country has its own catalogue of original and licensed shows and films. The country associated with your account does not change unless you move. Territorial rights explain much of the variation: rights may be controlled by multiple studios or distributors, unavailable in a particular region, or exclusive to another service. A licence may also cover only a limited period, after which a title can leave Netflix. Netflix says regional popularity is one factor in deciding what to offer.
“Netflix Original” does not necessarily mean available everywhere. Another company may hold a title’s rights in a particular region, or the title may have been made before Netflix could secure exclusive rights to it. Netflix describes these and other reasons in its guide to finding a TV show or movie and its explanation of country-specific catalogues.
Work out why a title is missing
Before changing network settings, check which of these situations best fits. Some can be resolved in your account or device; a regional rights restriction generally cannot.

| Possible cause | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Regional rights or an expired licence | Netflix does not have the title for your current country, or its availability window has ended. | There may be no account or device setting that makes the title available in that region. |
| Release timing | The title has not been released in your country yet. | Check again after its local release; changing profile or network settings will not change the release date. |
| Profile restrictions | A maturity setting or a title block may keep the title off a profile. | Review that profile’s viewing restrictions and blocked titles. |
| Profile language | Language settings can affect which titles are shown. | Check the profile’s language settings if titles seem to be missing from search or browsing. |
| VPN or location detection | Netflix may see a different location or limit the catalogue it displays. | Turn off the VPN for your local catalogue, then follow Netflix’s location troubleshooting if the location still appears wrong. |
Netflix lists release timing, regional rights, maturity limits, title blocks, profile language and VPN use among possible reasons a title cannot be found. A title’s absence alone does not identify which one applies.
What to do if Netflix is showing the wrong country
A location message can appear when Netflix cannot determine your country, including when a VPN is active. If you are travelling or have recently moved, a different catalogue may be expected. Netflix recommends signing out and back in to refresh the device’s location.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Turn off any VPN. Netflix says a VPN can make a device or network appear to connect from somewhere other than its physical location. After disconnecting it, reopen Netflix and check the catalogue again.
- Sign out and sign back in after travel or a move. This can refresh Netflix’s view of your location. The catalogue you see should reflect where you are, not necessarily the country associated with your account.
- Check the country Netflix detects. Netflix’s location troubleshooting guidance points to the country shown by the connection test at fast.com.
- Review your network setup. If Netflix still reports the wrong country, check network settings and follow Netflix’s troubleshooting steps. Contact your internet service provider if the reported location remains incorrect.
Why a VPN can show fewer titles
Netflix says a VPN can cause it to display only titles for which it has worldwide licensing, rather than the full catalogue for your physical location. To see titles available in your region, Netflix’s stated advice is to turn off the VPN. Its support guidance does not promise that a VPN will provide access to another country’s catalogue. VPNs are also unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing.
If you switch off a VPN and the catalogue is still wrong, treat that as a location-detection issue and use the steps above. If Netflix has correctly identified your country, a missing title is more likely to involve local availability, release timing or profile settings.

Watching downloads while travelling
A download does not override regional licensing. Netflix says an iPhone or iPad download may not play in a country where the title is unavailable. You may need to connect from a country where Netflix offers it, often the country where you downloaded it. See Netflix’s guidance on downloaded titles while travelling.
