Why was Mortal Kombat II delayed?
TheWrap reported on August 29, 2025, that the move was partly intended to avoid a crowded October release calendar and take advantage of a more favorable May window. Its account described October as having four or five new releases planned for each weekend. That was the publication’s explanation of the scheduling context, not a stated studio explanation establishing a single definitive cause.
TheWrap also cited earlier May box-office examples: it reported $84.4 million for the 2021 Mortal Kombat and more than $301 million worldwide for Final Destination Bloodlines. Those figures were part of the outlet’s discussion of the release window; they do not establish why the studios chose to change the date.

How did the director describe the new window?
In remarks reported by GameSpot and attributed there to The Hollywood Reporter, director Simon McQuoid said, “Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum.” He also described it as a “massive summer blockbuster” and said the wait would make its arrival feel “massive.” His comments present the film’s positioning and his view of its momentum; they do not show that summer positioning was the only reason for the schedule change.
