Morgan Wallen left the stage shortly after host Mikey Madison’s farewell during the March 29, 2025, Saturday Night Live goodnights. In May, Wallen said he was ready to go home after spending the week in New York and denied that the show had made him angry. The broadcast shows when he left; it does not establish a hidden grievance or deliberate message.
What happened during the SNL goodnights?
The moment came at the close of Saturday Night Live Season 50, Episode 16, hosted by Mikey Madison on March 29, 2025. Wallen was the musical guest, performing “I’m the Problem” and “Just in Case.” NBC’s episode listing identifies the broadcast and its performers.
During the closing goodnights, Wallen stood with Madison, then left the stage shortly after her farewell as the credits began. Cast and guests were still mingling, which made his departure stand out. TVLine’s contemporaneous account describes the exit and the performances.
What did Wallen say about leaving?
In a May 2025 interview on Caleb Pressley’s Sundae Conversation, Wallen was asked whether SNL had made him mad. He replied, “No, no,” and said, “I was just ready to go home. Been there all week.” The Los Angeles Times reported this as Wallen’s first public explanation of the walk-off. It is his account of why he left, not independent confirmation of every factor behind his decision.

Shortly after the show, Wallen posted an airplane photo on Instagram with the caption “Get me to God’s country.” Some viewers took the words as a dig at New York, but the caption alone does not establish that this was his intent. It also does not prove that his stage exit was meant as an insult or statement about the show.

There is no confirmed evidence in the cited reporting that a backstage dispute caused Wallen to leave. Cast member Kenan Thompson said he did not know the backstory. Speaking to Good Day New York, he speculated that Wallen might not have known he was expected to stay, while stressing his uncertainty: “I have no idea, I mean… I’ve been reading [about it] as much as you. So apparently he didn’t know to stay or something like that?” LateNighter reported Thompson’s remarks. His comment is speculation, not a confirmed explanation.
