BRATS, Andrew McCarthy’s 2024 documentary about the Brat Pack label, does not include new on-camera interviews with Molly Ringwald or Judd Nelson. McCarthy said Ringwald considered participating but did not commit; he described Nelson as initially open before scheduling and contact attempts failed and Nelson ultimately declined. Nelson also gave his own reason: he was uncomfortable with the subject becoming edited entertainment and did not want to revisit an experience he had not found fun.
Why Molly Ringwald isn’t in BRATS
McCarthy told Us Weekly that he had a brief conversation with Ringwald about joining the film. She said she would think about it, but did not follow up with a commitment. McCarthy said her preference was to keep looking forward, and that archival footage gives her a presence in the documentary. He also said he would have welcomed an interview, describing her as articulate and insightful.

In a separate interview with Katie Couric Media, McCarthy said Ringwald was the former Brat Pack colleague he had seen with some consistency over the years, since they sometimes ran into each other around town. The account that she would probably prefer to look forward comes from McCarthy’s description, not a direct statement by Ringwald to the outlet.
Why Judd Nelson isn’t in BRATS
McCarthy said Nelson initially seemed willing to take part. In a phone exchange shown in the documentary, McCarthy tells Nelson he wants their conversation to be on camera. McCarthy later described scheduling confusion and difficulty getting in touch with him; Nelson eventually said he did not want to participate. McCarthy said the decision was Nelson’s to make.

Nelson separately explained his reluctance in remarks to Us Weekly, reproduced by TV Insider: “It seems strange to have that subject matter be something for edited entertainment.” Nelson also said he had not seen McCarthy in 35 years and did not want to revive something that “wasn’t necessarily fun.” Those are Nelson’s reported views, distinct from McCarthy’s account of how the outreach unfolded.
How the two absences differ
| Actor | What McCarthy said about outreach | Reported preference or rationale | Presence in the film |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molly Ringwald | She said she would think about participating but did not commit. | McCarthy said she preferred to keep looking forward; this is his account of her stance. | Archival footage, but no new on-camera interview. |
| Judd Nelson | He initially seemed open, but scheduling and contact attempts did not lead to an interview; he ultimately declined. | Nelson said the topic seemed strange as edited entertainment and that he did not want to revisit an experience that was not necessarily fun. | No new on-camera interview. |
The reported accounts do not establish a feud or deliberate exclusion. McCarthy said he held no ill will toward people who chose not to participate, and saw those decisions as part of the documentary’s account of how people relate differently to the Brat Pack label.

Rank #2
McCarthy’s interest grew out of his own reflection on the label. He wrote about his experience in his 2021 memoir, Brat: An ’80s Story, then sought out peers to learn how they had been affected. In a Katie Couric Media interview, he recalled feeling stigmatized by the 1985 New York magazine article and initially believing the label limited the roles available to him. That is his retrospective view, not a measured finding about the industry.
