MLB chose Apple primarily to broaden the reach of selected games, not to move its entire schedule away from television. The league said Apple could put nationally televised games in front of a large U.S. and international audience through its devices, apps and streaming platform. The arrangement also gave MLB another major buyer for live sports rights and a way to experiment with direct-to-consumer broadcasting.
The original 2022 package was briefly available without an Apple TV+ subscription. That is no longer the current model: Apple’s 2026 announcement says a subscription is required for Friday Night Baseball.
What MLB actually put on Apple TV+
The deal created Friday Night Baseball, a weekly national package built around a Friday-night doubleheader. It was not a complete MLB broadcast agreement and did not replace local team broadcasts or the league’s other national television partners.
The package also included live pregame and postgame programs. In the United States, Apple’s launch announcement included MLB Big Inning, a highlights and look-in program, along with replays, highlights, classic games, news and analysis. Apple initially announced availability in the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea and the United Kingdom, with games free from local broadcast restrictions for that package.

Apple’s 2026 materials describe the arrangement as a weekly doubleheader across 60 countries and regions during the 25-week regular season. The footprint and access rules have therefore changed substantially since launch.

MLB’s stated reason: reach more viewers
In an April 2022 interview with iMore, MLB chief revenue officer Noah Garden said Apple could distribute the games to a large domestic and international audience. His argument was that selected games needed a genuinely national platform rather than remaining confined to the audiences that already followed particular teams locally.
Garden acknowledged that putting games on another service could contribute to a fragmented viewing experience. MLB’s position, however, was that national distribution could expose baseball to people who would not otherwise encounter those games. In that sense, the league presented Apple as an audience-expansion partner rather than simply another place to sell broadcasts.
That was the public rationale—not proof that every fan would find the arrangement more convenient. A streaming-exclusive package can broaden potential distribution while also requiring viewers to find a new app, service or subscription.

Why Apple was an attractive partner
A large technology ecosystem
Apple offered MLB more than a traditional television channel. Its Apple TV app could reach people through Apple hardware as well as supported smart TVs, game consoles, cable set-top boxes and the web. That gave the league a way to distribute the same national package across a broad range of consumer devices.
International distribution
MLB also valued Apple’s global presence. The launch covered several countries outside the United States, and the current package reaches 60 countries and regions. International access was important because the deal was designed as a global streaming product, not merely a U.S. cable add-on.
An existing relationship
The partnership was not entirely new. MLB and Apple had worked together since the launch of MLB’s At Bat app on the App Store in 2008. MLB also cited Apple technology used in ballparks and described the agreement as part of its longer history of experimenting with digital distribution and fan-facing products.
That history likely reduced the practical distance between the two companies, although the available public statements do not establish that Apple won because it made the highest bid or defeated specific competing bidders.

Was it really about money?
MLB’s official explanation emphasized audience reach and national exposure. The commercial logic was broader than that public message.
- Rights diversification: MLB gained another buyer for live sports content instead of relying on a small number of traditional television partners.
- Streaming experience: The league could learn how fans respond to a direct-to-consumer national package.
- Platform competition: A deal with Apple placed MLB inside the growing competition among broadcasters, technology companies and streaming services for live sports.
- Subscription value: Live baseball gave Apple premium programming that could help make its service more attractive, although the sources here do not establish the size of that effect.
The Associated Press later reported a rights fee of $85 million per season. That is secondary reporting, not a figure confirmed in MLB’s or Apple’s launch announcement, so it should not be treated as the publicly stated reason for the decision.
MLB did not abandon traditional television. Its wider media structure continued to include partners such as ESPN, Fox, Turner/TBS, NBCUniversal, Netflix, MLB Network and streaming services. MLB’s 2026 rights announcement confirms that Apple remained responsible for Friday Night Baseball while other partners handled different packages.

What “free” meant at launch
Friday Night Baseball was not permanently free. Apple’s original announcement said the games would be available on Apple TV+ and, for a limited time, without an Apple TV+ subscription. Garden likewise told iMore that viewers initially would not need to subscribe, while leaving open the possibility that the games would later move behind the paywall.
That distinction matters when comparing the 2022 launch with the current service. Apple’s 2026 announcement explicitly says “Subscription required.” The early free-access period was a launch arrangement, not a standing promise that anyone could watch the package without paying.

Potential advantages
- Selected games received national distribution rather than remaining limited to local audiences.
- The package expanded internationally.
- Apple made the broadcasts available through a range of supported devices, not only Apple-branded hardware.
- Fans received dedicated pregame, postgame and highlights programming.
- The Friday package was separate from many local-market restrictions affecting other MLB games.
Potential disadvantages
- Exclusive games require fans to use another platform.
- The initial no-subscription access did not last indefinitely.
- A subscription is required under Apple’s 2026 terms.
- Different rights packages across different services can make live sports harder to follow.
- Friday Night Baseball does not include every MLB game, and its access rules should not be confused with the blackout policies for other broadcasts.
The phrase “free from local broadcast restrictions” applied to the Friday Night Baseball package described by Apple. It does not mean that every MLB game became free of blackouts or local-rights limitations.

How Friday Night Baseball evolved by 2026
By 2026, the partnership had reached its fifth season. Apple described a weekly doubleheader available across 60 countries and regions, with a subscription required.
The production also became a technology demonstration as well as a rights arrangement. MLB Network’s production team works with Apple’s live sports production team, and Apple has highlighted enhanced production techniques and additional camera perspectives. Apple further said that iPhone 17 Pro was used as a primary camera in a 2025 live professional sports broadcast and would be integrated more deeply into selected 2026 broadcasts.
That evolution reflects the original appeal of the arrangement: MLB was not merely licensing games to a new channel. It was testing how a major technology company could present, distribute and package live baseball.

What the deal did—and did not—mean
MLB did not move all of its games to Apple TV+, and Apple did not replace ESPN or become MLB’s sole national broadcaster. The deal was a selected weekly package intended to add national and international exposure while giving both companies experience with streaming-exclusive sports.
For fans, the result is mixed. Apple can make certain games available across a much wider geography than a conventional local broadcast, but exclusivity also creates another destination to track and, in 2026, another subscription requirement. Whether that is worthwhile depends on how often a viewer wants Friday Night Baseball and whether Apple’s broader entertainment service matters to them.
For MLB, the decision was best understood as a combination of audience strategy, rights diversification and digital experimentation. “Reach more fans” was the league’s stated reason; the structure of the deal shows that building a durable streaming business was part of the larger strategy too.
