Mindhunter did not get a third season because, according to David Fincher, Netflix judged the expensive series’ audience too small to justify the investment. Fincher also said making the show took a punishing toll on his time and energy. The series had been put on indefinite hold before he gave that fuller explanation in 2023.
Why Netflix did not see a third season as worth the investment
In a February 2023 interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, Fincher said he was proud of the first two seasons, but that “in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for season three].” Vanity Fair reproduced his remarks on February 21, 2023.

That is Fincher’s account of Netflix’s assessment, not a published audience figure or a disclosure of the company’s internal finances. The sources do not provide a verified budget, audience total, or cost-per-viewer figure, so the size of the alleged shortfall cannot be quantified.
Fincher had described the same basic business problem in a 2020 interview with Vulture: “for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.” He said he did not think a third season could be made for less than the second and summed up the calculation this way: “On some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.” TVLine reproduced the Vulture remarks.

Fincher said he did not blame Netflix, noting that the company had taken risks on Mindhunter and supported other projects. His comments point to a cost-versus-audience decision—not a claim that Netflix had released a specific metric proving the show failed.
How the production burden factored in
The financial explanation was not the only obstacle Fincher described. In the Vulture interview, he said, “It’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life,” and recalled being exhausted afterward and unsure he had the energy to develop a third season. Vanity Fair reported his recollection that the production spent six or seven months a year in Pittsburgh over three years.

The distinction matters. Mindhunter premiered in 2017, and its second season arrived in August 2019. In early 2020, the series was described as being on indefinite hold. Lead actors Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their contracts, with Fincher’s busy schedule cited at the time. TVLine reported that Netflix had not formally canceled the series at that point.

In 2020, Netflix’s representative reportedly said the show was not then in the works but did not rule out a possible future return. Fincher’s 2023 comments supplied the clearest public explanation for why a third-season investment did not proceed: the audience, in Netflix’s view, did not justify the cost. The available reporting does not establish a current revival plan, nor does it prove a return is impossible.
