Michelle Rodriguez is in the original Avatar (2009), where she plays Trudy Chacón. She is not listed in the cast of the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). According to secondary reporting on Rodriguez’s 2023 Vanity Fair interview, James Cameron floated bringing Trudy back, and Rodriguez declined because she felt the character’s story had already ended and that reviving her would weaken the impact of her sacrifice and death.
Rodriguez is in the first film, not the sequel
The official Avatar film page lists Rodriguez in the cast and identifies her character as Trudy Chacón. That is the 2009 film, released December 18, 2009. The question readers usually mean is why she does not appear in the follow-up, which was released December 16, 2022.

How the two films compare on her casting
| Film | Release date | Rodriguez listed in cast? | Trudy Chacón |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar (2009) | December 18, 2009 | Yes, per the official film page | Played by Rodriguez; her character is in the story |
| Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) | December 16, 2022 | No, not in the official cast list | Not in the cast list; no return is confirmed |
The official sequel page describes The Way of Water as set more than a decade after the first film and centred on the Sully family. Rodriguez’s absence is a matter of the cast list, not a change in the franchise’s timeline.
The reported reason: she declined a Trudy return
The explanation comes from reporting by NME on Rodriguez’s 2023 Vanity Fair interview. In that account, Cameron considered bringing Trudy back for the sequel, and Rodriguez turned the idea down. Her reasoning, as NME describes it, was that Trudy’s arc was complete and that bringing her back would reduce the weight of her death and the sacrifice it represented.

Two limits apply. NME’s page was not accessible in a form that allowed the original wording to be checked, and the full Vanity Fair interview was not reviewed for this article. The account here is therefore a paraphrase of secondary reporting, not a direct quotation from Rodriguez. If you need her exact words, read the interview itself.
What the reported reason does not establish
The available reporting does not say that the studio or production excluded Rodriguez, and it does not point to scheduling, contracts or other casting logistics as the cause. The only explanation tied to a specific decision is Rodriguez’s own reported choice to decline the Trudy return.

Other original cast members did return
Some performers from the first film did appear in the sequel. Disney’s cast announcement confirms that Sigourney Weaver returned as Kiri, a character connected to the avatar of Weaver’s original character, Dr. Grace Augustine. That shows the franchise brought back original actors in new roles. It does not show that Rodriguez was offered or considered for a role other than the Trudy return described above.
