Michael Grant left 9-1-1 because actor Rockmond Dunbar, who played him, exited the series after a dispute connected to the production’s COVID-19 vaccination policy. TheWrap reported in November 2021 that Dunbar left over the mandate. Dunbar has said he requested medical and religious accommodations and that his employer denied them, but he has declined to discuss the private details behind his position. On screen, the character’s exit is a separate storyline: Michael leaves Los Angeles to join David in Haiti.
The on-screen exit: Michael goes to Haiti
In the show’s storyline, Michael leaves Los Angeles to join David in Haiti. TVLine identifies Season 5’s “Defend in Place” as Dunbar’s final episode as a series regular. That is the story explanation for the character’s departure, and it should not be confused with the behind-the-scenes circumstances that led to Dunbar’s exit. Reporting does not indicate that the fictional plot was written to reflect the real-world dispute.
The off-screen cause: the vaccination policy dispute
Reporting from TheWrap and TVLine connected Dunbar’s exit to the COVID-19 vaccination requirement that applied to production personnel. Deadline’s account, republished by Yahoo, likewise tied the exit to COVID-19 protocols and said Dunbar’s exemption requests were denied, attributing that account to sources rather than to a public statement. Each of these reports is secondary; the strongest primary material comes from the parties’ own statements, summarized below.
Dunbar’s account
Dunbar’s public comments are limited. He said:
“I applied for religious and medical accommodations pursuant to the law and unfortunately was denied by my employer.”

He also said:
“My sincerely held beliefs and private medical history are very intimate and personal aspects of my life that I do not publicly discuss and have no desire to start now.”
Both statements are reproduced in the TVLine report. Dunbar did not describe his beliefs or medical situation, and no published account in the reporting does so.

20th Television’s stated policy
20th Television, the studio behind the series, described its approach in a statement that TVLine reproduced: “We take the health and safety of all of our employees very seriously, and have implemented a mandatory vaccination confirmation process for those working in Zone A on our productions.”
As the studio described it, personnel working in Zone A had to confirm their vaccination status or meet the studio’s exemption criteria to remain eligible to work. Personnel who did neither would not be eligible to work. The policy was therefore a condition of employment on the production, not a story decision made for the show’s characters.

What the reporting does and does not establish
The reporting is clear on the sequence of events and the parties’ positions. It is not clear on several points, and readers should keep these separate:
- Established: Dunbar left the series, the departure was connected to the vaccination policy, and Dunbar says his accommodation requests were denied.
- Established as the studio’s position: 20th Television required vaccination confirmation or qualifying exemption for Zone A personnel.
- Not established: Dunbar’s specific religious beliefs, his medical circumstances, the legal merits of his requests, and any private communications between him and the production. He has said he will not discuss them, and the reporting does not supply them.
- Not established: Whether the character’s exit was planned in relation to the dispute. The on-screen story is reported only as Michael joining David in Haiti.
Timing and the final episodes
TheWrap’s November 16, 2021 report says Dunbar left after more than four seasons and that the episode featuring his farewell was moved forward on the schedule. That scheduling detail is attributed to a person close to production, not to an official announcement, so it should be read as reported rather than confirmed. TVLine’s identification of “Defend in Place” as his last episode as a series regular is the most specific episode reference in the coverage.

Reading this story in 2026
All of the reporting dates from November 2021, when many productions were operating under COVID-19 vaccination rules that have since changed or been dropped. This article describes what was reported at that time. It does not establish the production’s current policies, and it does not establish how the dispute was resolved beyond Dunbar’s departure. For the full text of the statements, use the original reports linked above, which remain the best primary references on the subject.
For the timeline of Michael’s on-screen story and the cast’s broader changes, TheWrap’s original report is the most detailed contemporary account of the exit itself.
