Michael Bolton didn’t refuse to work with The Lonely Island. He objected to the language in their first concept for “Jack Sparrow,” worrying it could unsettle his core audience. After the group reworked the idea, he agreed to record and appear in the SNL Digital Short.
What did Michael Bolton object to?
Bolton said he wanted to work with The Lonely Island as soon as they met because he liked their earlier comedy shorts. But he was uneasy about the language in the first version of their idea. In a 2015 Esquire interview, he recalled telling the group: “I really want to work with you, but I don’t want to frighten the hell out of my core audience and have them go ‘why is he doing this?’”

So “refused to sing” is an imprecise shorthand: Bolton balked at the original concept, not at the collaboration itself.
What changed before he agreed?
The Lonely Island said they would work on the idea. Seven months later, Andy Samberg emailed Bolton a new concept. Bolton recalled responding, “Oh my God, I could do this.” The revised pitch addressed his concern enough for him to move forward.

How did the recording and filming happen?
According to Bolton’s account to Esquire, he recorded the song in Atlanta while the group produced it by phone, then traveled to New York to film the short.
When did “Jack Sparrow” appear on SNL?
The Lonely Island’s official catalog lists “Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton)” as an SNL Digital Short released May 7, 2011. The listing identifies it as Season 36, Episode 20, gives its runtime as 3:16, and associates it with the album Turtleneck & Chain. See the official catalog.

How did Bolton later describe the response?
In a 2023 Recording Academy interview, Bolton said he hid in the SNL building while the short aired because he was anxious about viewers’ reaction. He later recalled younger people recognizing him through the comedy and becoming interested in his music. That is Bolton’s account of the response, not an independently measured finding about listening or viewership.
In the same interview, Bolton estimated that the video had “over 250 million views.” That figure is his estimate as reported in 2023, not an independently verified platform count.
