PEOPLE reported on July 22, 2025 that Matty Healy and his fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel did not attend Charli xcx and George Daniel’s legal ceremony because Bechtel had work commitments on I Know What You Did Last Summer that kept them in Los Angeles. The explanation came from an anonymous insider, not from Healy or Bechtel. The ceremony itself was a legal wedding at Hackney Town Hall in London, not the larger celebration that followed.
What was reported
The legal ceremony took place at Hackney Town Hall in London on Saturday, July 19, 2025. According to PEOPLE, Healy and Bechtel were not there. The report attributed their absence to the film: Bechtel’s work on I Know What You Did Last Summer kept the couple in Los Angeles that weekend.

Where the reason comes from
The explanation rests on a single unnamed source. PEOPLE’s article gives no name, role or relationship to the couple for the insider, and it includes no direct comment from Healy or Bechtel. The sentence attributed to the insider reads:
“Matty and Gabbriette weren’t able to make the legal ceremony due to her work commitments for I Know What You Did Last Summer keeping them in L.A. this weekend, but they look forward to attending the Sicily wedding.”

Because this is an anonymous-source account, it is accurate to write “PEOPLE reported, citing an anonymous insider” rather than “Healy said” or “the couple confirmed.” Nothing in the report shows either person speaking on the record about the weekend.
Two events, two different statuses
Coverage of this story often blurs the legal ceremony with the later celebration. The table below separates them as the July 2025 report did.

The report treats the Sicily event as an intention, not an outcome. This article has no later account confirming whether either of them went.
The film timeline behind the claim
PEOPLE’s article also places the film on the calendar: its Los Angeles premiere was on July 14, 2025 and its theatrical release on July 18, 2025. These dates make the claimed work schedule plausible, since the release was the day before the ceremony. They do not, however, verify where the couple was that weekend. The location claim still rests on the anonymous insider.

Why the absence drew attention
Healy had attended George Daniel’s bachelor party in Ibiza earlier in July 2025, according to the same report. That made a missed legal ceremony more noticeable to readers following the group’s circle. The report does not connect the two events beyond noting the contrast, and it offers no evidence of any tension between the couple and the hosts. The stated reason is work.
