The likely cameo behind this headline is Matt Damon as Donny, the bald punk singer in the 2004 comedy EuroTrip who performs “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” Damon was already in Prague filming another movie when the EuroTrip filmmakers asked him to take the part. Their limited options, their existing connection to Damon and his shaved-head look all helped make the surprise appearance work.
Why was Matt Damon in EuroTrip?
EuroTrip was filming in Prague while Damon was in the city working on Terry Gilliam’s The Brothers Grimm. Director Jeff Schaffer and writer David Mandel later recalled that the comedy had a limited budget, and actors in Los Angeles were reluctant to travel to Prague amid concerns at the time about the Gulf War and SARS. That left the filmmakers looking at performers who were already nearby. As Schaffer put it, “our pool of talented actors was reduced to, ‘Who’s shooting a movie in Prague right now?’”

Damon was both available and known to the filmmakers, so they asked him to do the scene. Mandel recalled that travel concerns also narrowed the options: “Even if we had the money, no one wanted to come. It seemed dangerous in some weird way.” Those are the filmmakers’ retrospective descriptions of the production climate, not a measured assessment of travel risk. The cameo came about through a mix of location, practical constraints and personal familiarity—not simply because the movie could not afford another actor. The A.V. Club’s oral history of EuroTrip
How did Damon’s look fit the part?
Damon’s head had been shaved for The Brothers Grimm, where he wore a wig. The EuroTrip filmmakers also remembered him as having recently quit smoking and being unusually buff. The shaved head gave him a ready-made punk-singer look for Donny, the character who delivers the movie’s central musical humiliation.

What is the story behind “Scotty Doesn’t Know”?
In the film, Donny sings that he has been sleeping with Scotty’s girlfriend, Fiona, while Scotty remains unaware. The song was written for EuroTrip by the band Lustra, whose members appear onstage. A later account of Damon’s explanation adds a personal connection: the writers had Harvard ties to him, the song was linked to his college circle through a roommate’s brother, and his roommate Jason Adams played guitar in the band. That report describes the cameo and song as a “family affair.” Mental Floss’s account of Damon’s explanation
Is this the same story as Damon’s other cameos?
No. Damon has appeared in other films in small roles, but those appearances have separate explanations. EuroTrip is the Prague-and-personal-connections story; the other cameos should not be folded into it.

Why the cameo still catches viewers off guard
Damon’s appearance is brief, his head is shaved, and he is playing a loud punk singer rather than a familiar version of himself. The contrast is part of the joke: a recognizable leading man suddenly appears in a small, deliberately outrageous role, then launches into a song that becomes central to the movie’s comedy. The A.V. Club’s oral history captures that recurring viewer reaction: people “can’t believe that’s Matt Damon.” A.V. Club
