Criticism of Margot Robbie’s casting as Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw centered in part on the gap between Robbie’s adult age and the novel’s portrayal of Cathy as being in her late teens. It also became part of a wider debate over Emerald Fennell’s changes to Emily Brontë’s novel. Fennell defended the casting as her interpretation of Cathy; Robbie said she understood the reaction before audiences had seen the film.
Why was Margot Robbie’s casting criticized?
Emily Brontë’s novel describes Cathy as being in her late teens. When the casting and early images of Fennell’s adaptation became public, some critics and commenters questioned Robbie’s suitability for the role because she was in her mid-30s. The early trailers also showed Robbie with blond hair, while The Guardian noted that the novel describes Cathy as dark-haired. These were objections raised by critics, not proof that audiences shared one view of the casting.

The coverage does not establish how widespread the criticism was. It also does not reduce the debate to a general judgment of Robbie’s acting: the specific concern was how her appearance and age compared with readers’ expectations of Brontë’s character. The Guardian’s December 2025 report describes the novel’s characterization and Robbie’s response to the pre-release discussion.
How did Emerald Fennell defend the casting?
Fennell presented Robbie’s casting as a creative choice grounded in her own reading of Cathy, rather than as an attempt to reproduce every detail of the novel. In September 2025, she said Robbie had, in her view, Cathy’s ability to get away with anything, and that the role called for a performer with “a power, an otherworldly power, a godlike power”. Fennell also said of the novel, “no one is in agreement about any element of it”. Those comments explain the director’s rationale; they do not settle the disagreement for readers who prioritize fidelity to the book.

Robbie did not describe the role as something assigned to her without her input. At a February 2026 BFI conversation, Fennell said Robbie asked to play Cathy after reading the script. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Robbie said she had begun imagining how she would play the character and asked to be considered; Fennell said she was relieved Robbie initiated the conversation.
What did Robbie say about the criticism?
Before release, Robbie acknowledged why people were reacting based on the limited material available. The Guardian quoted her, via a Vogue interview, saying: “I get it … there’s nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.” Her response recognized the basis of the scrutiny while asking audiences to wait until they could judge the film itself.

How does the casting debate fit the adaptation?
The question of who should play Cathy was one part of broader scrutiny of Fennell’s adaptation, which also drew attention for its trailer and provocative screen tests. The film is not a straightforward, scene-by-scene transfer of Brontë’s novel: Fennell said, “I can’t adapt the book as it is but I can approximate the way it made me feel.” The Guardian reported that the film focuses on the first half of the book rather than continuing its later-generation story, and the Associated Press characterized it as a highly interpretive adaptation that changes and condenses the novel.
That context matters, but it should not blur separate debates. The criticism of Robbie discussed here concerned her age and the novel’s description of Cathy. Controversy around Jacob Elordi’s casting as Heathcliff involved different questions about the character and the source text; it is adjacent to, not an explanation for, objections to Robbie’s casting.
Which film is being discussed?
This is Emerald Fennell’s 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Warner Bros.’ official film site lists Fennell as writer-director and identifies the film as available digitally and on 4K Ultra HD disc. Its US theatrical release was listed as February 13, 2026, with international release beginning February 11, 2026. Warner Bros.’ film page provides the official film and availability details.
