Kevin Costner said he had been trying to make Horizon: An American Saga for more than 30 years. He described the commitment as personal as well as professional: he said he mortgaged his Santa Barbara estate to help fund a production he called a “$100 million-plus” undertaking. Those are Costner’s accounts, not independently audited figures. His explanation was that he did not want to keep building wealth at the expense of making the kind of film he felt called to make.
Why did Kevin Costner mortgage his home to make Horizon?
In a May 2024 Associated Press interview, Costner said he had put substantial personal assets behind the film and mortgaged his Santa Barbara estate to raise money. He characterized the production as costing more than $100 million; the interview does not establish an audited final budget or a reconciled cost for the full saga. The Associated Press interview also captured his rationale: “You can spend your life just trying to make your pile grow bigger and bigger. And I’ve not been really terribly great at that. I’m like anyone else, I’d like it to be big. But not at the expense of not doing what I feel like I’ve love to do.”
His remarks frame the mortgage as a way to keep a long-held project moving, not as a claim that personal financing alone paid for the film. The available account does not provide a complete financing breakdown.
What made Horizon a decades-long commitment?
Costner told AP he had been trying to make Horizon for “more than 30 years.” That duration is his account of the effort, rather than a separately documented timeline of continuous production. The story was planned as a multi-chapter saga, a scale that required more than completing one feature.

In the same May 2024 interview, Costner said scripts for Chapters 3 and 4 existed and that he had filmed three days of Chapter 3. Those details describe the project as he reported it then; they do not confirm the chapters’ later production status or release.
Why was Cannes important to Costner?
Horizon: An American Saga screened at the Festival de Cannes on May 19, 2024. Costner described the festival appearance as a chance to raise awareness for a film he said he could not promote with unlimited spending. “I thank God for Cannes. I’m an independent filmmaker, essentially, and I’m here by myself,” he told AP.

The Cannes screening was a high-profile launch opportunity, not proof of a particular financing or distribution outcome. The festival’s announcement confirms the screening date; Costner’s interview explains why he valued the exposure.
What happened to the later chapters?
Chapter 1 began streaming exclusively on Max on August 23, 2024, according to Warner Bros.’ announcement. Chapter 2 had an announced world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, as stated by the Venice Biennale.

That festival premiere announcement is distinct from a broad commercial release. The Associated Press later reported that Chapter 2’s planned wide release was put on hold after Chapter 1’s box-office performance. The sources establish a postponement, not cancellation, and do not establish a current wide-release date. AP’s report on the release plan is the basis for that distinction.

The word “destiny” fits Costner’s own description of a project he had pursued for decades and was willing to risk personal assets to make. It describes his commitment, not a guaranteed commercial result. His Cannes comments also reveal the practical side of that conviction: even a filmmaker willing to invest heavily still needs ways to put a film in front of audiences.
