Magneto removes Wolverine’s adamantium in X-Men ’97 as revenge after Wolverine attacks him—not because of a joke. The episode adapts the Fatal Attractions comic storyline. A later joke by showrunner Beau DeMayo used a familiar Wolverine meme to poke fun at what happened to Logan; it was a reaction to the scene, not its cause.

Why did Magneto rip the metal out of Wolverine?

In “Tolerance Is Extinction – Part 2,” Wolverine attacks Magneto and fatally stabs him. Magneto retaliates by pulling the adamantium from Wolverine’s body. Marvel’s official X-Men ’97 character guide likewise describes Magneto pulling out Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton.

The act is both retaliation within the episode and a major turning point in the characters’ fight. The removed metal is adamantium, the fictional alloy bonded to Wolverine’s skeleton—not simply armor he was wearing.

Was the scene based on Fatal Attractions?

Yes. Episode 9 adapts the famous 1990s X-Men storyline Fatal Attractions, in which Magneto tears the adamantium from Wolverine after Wolverine attacks him. ComicBook.com identifies the animated scene as an adaptation of that material. [ComicBook.com]

Writer Beau DeMayo said the story had stayed with him since childhood. He recalled reading Fatal Attractions and seeing a trading card depicting Wolverine’s adamantium being pulled out. “To be able to write that and bring that to the screen was very cool and very weird,” he told No Film School. What was the joke about?

After the episode, DeMayo posted a humorous take on Wolverine’s predicament using the familiar “Sad Wolverine” meme. ComicBook.com reported the post alongside the episode’s Fatal Attractions connection. [ComicBook.com]

What it refers to What it explains
Fatal Attractions, the comic storyline The narrative source for Magneto removing Wolverine’s adamantium.
DeMayo’s later meme post A humorous reaction to Wolverine’s fate after the scene.

The available reporting connects the joke to the aftermath, not to Magneto’s in-story decision or the creative reason for adapting the moment.

How did the show depict the moment for TV-14?

Episode director Emmett Yonemura said the team had to balance the scene’s pain and violence with the series’ TV-14 ceiling. They discussed how much blood to show and considered a black-and-white silhouette, but pulled back because it might suggest Wolverine had exploded. “We always knew we were TV-14, but how do you rip the adamantium out of somebody and try and make that anything less,” Yonemura told CinemaBlend.
