ABC News reported on November 20, 2000, citing Entertainment Weekly, that Liu received $1 million, Diaz’s payday was $12 million, and Barrymore received $9 million for starring and co-producing the first film. These are reported amounts, not confirmed contract figures.

A Guardian article published May 7, 2000 said there had been “suggestions” Liu was annoyed by the difference between her wage and those of her “more famous fellow Angels.” That wording reports speculation; it does not confirm Liu’s feelings, explain the negotiations, or show that the pay gap resulted from a particular studio decision.
What industry context helps explain the comparison?
A Los Angeles Times feature from January 2000 discussed the competition for the role of Alex, which went to Liu, and described an industry in which women had fewer chances to headline action films and were not generally commanding the same reported pay as top male action stars.
