In a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, she described seeing intimacy and freedom in the footage, while also questioning whether it was wrong to watch. The tape was private material stolen and circulated without the couple’s consent—a central part of the story, not a footnote.
What Lorde said about watching the tape
In Brittany Spanos’s 2025 Rolling Stone cover story, Lorde recalled that after her second psychedelic therapy session she searched for the Anderson–Lee tape and watched the whole thing. She said: “I found it to be so beautiful. And maybe it’s fucked up that I watched it, but I saw two people that were so in love with each other, and there was this purity. They were jumping off this big boat… They were like children. They were so free. And I just was like, ‘Whoa. Being this free comes with danger.’” Read the interview in Rolling Stone.
That is Lorde’s personal recollection and interpretation. It establishes the sequence she described; it does not establish that therapy caused her to watch the tape, or offer evidence about psychedelic therapy generally.
Why the tape’s privacy history matters
The honeymoon video was private material involving Anderson and her then-husband Tommy Lee. The Associated Press describes the home videos as stolen, reproduced, and distributed for sale, and characterizes their circulation as a violation of Anderson’s privacy. Its review also notes that the later Hulu series Pam & Tommy, made without Anderson’s involvement or consent, reopened wounds. Read the Associated Press review.

That context complicates Lorde’s response: she found an impression of love and freedom in the footage, but also acknowledged the ethical problem of watching material made public without consent. Reporting on the anecdote should not turn the tape into ordinary celebrity entertainment or direct readers to copies.
Cosmopolitan reports that Anderson addressed the harm in the 2023 documentary Pamela, A Love Story: “If anyone watches it, if anyone buys it, if anyone sells it, it’s just pathetic. You can’t put a monetary number on the amount of pain and suffering it caused.” This is Anderson’s statement as quoted by Cosmopolitan from the documentary. Read Cosmopolitan’s account.

How the story connects to Virgin and “Current Affairs”
The interview places the anecdote among Lorde’s reflections on her body, sexuality, gender expression, and creative risks around her album Virgin. Cosmopolitan identifies “Current Affairs” as the album’s sixth track and says its second verse refers to the honeymoon tape and the moment private material became public.
The connection offers context for the song, not a definitive interpretation. The cited coverage does not settle exactly what every lyric means or establish a single intended reading. Lorde’s anecdote can help explain the personal and artistic terrain surrounding the album without overriding the privacy history or Anderson’s account of the harm.
