Liza Colón-Zayas’s 2024 Emmy win matters because she became the first Latina to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for playing Tina in The Bear. The milestone is specific to that category. It is not evidence that Latine representation gaps in television have been closed.
What she won and what the record shows
The Television Academy’s official 2024 category record names Colón-Zayas as the winner of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as Tina in The Bear. The Academy’s ceremony page dates the award to September 15, 2024, the night of the 76th Emmy Awards.
The Academy describes her as the first Latina to receive an Emmy in this category. The precise claim is therefore narrow: she is the first Latina winner of this comedy supporting-actress award. It is not a claim that she was the first Latina to win any Emmy, and readers should keep the two apart when they repeat it.
Why the category milestone matters
A major award’s top tier is where an industry signals whose work it considers the best of the year. Before 2024, no Latina had won this particular category. Colón-Zayas’s win put a Latina performer’s work at that level of recognition in a comedy category, which is the practical significance of the first.
#1 Best Overall
What the win means beyond that is interpretation. It can matter to viewers who want to see themselves represented on screen and to the industry conversations about whose performances are celebrated. Those effects are real as arguments, but no measurement in the available material shows that the award changed hiring, casting or viewing patterns.
What the representation numbers do and do not show
The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), in a statement dated September 16, 2024, reported that Latine candidates made up less than 6% of the candidates submitted by voters in Emmy performing categories that year. That submission share produced five Latine nominations. NHMC is an advocacy organization, and this is its reading of 2024 submissions. It is not an independently verified census and should not be presented as a current figure.

Three different measures are often blended together in discussions of this win. They answer different questions:
| Measure | What it shows | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Category first | Colón-Zayas is the first Latina to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series | Television Academy, 2024 category record and biography |
| Submission share | Latine candidates were under 6% of Emmy performing-category submissions, leading to five Latine nominations | NHMC statement, September 16, 2024; covers 2024 submissions only |
| Overall industry representation | Not stated in the sources behind this article | No current, verified figure was available for this article |
Treating the category first as proof of broader parity would overstate it. A single winner in one category says little about how many Latine performers are working, auditioning or being submitted for awards in any given year.

What was said at the ceremony
Several remarks from the 2024 ceremony and its aftermath frame the win.
John Leguizamo
Actor and speaker John Leguizamo, presenting at the 76th Emmys, said: “But we need more stories from excluded groups: Black, Asian, Jewish, Arab, LGBTQ+ and disabled.” That is a broad statement about representation, not a remark by Colón-Zayas.
Rank #4
David Zayas
In a PBS interview, actor David Zayas discussed Latino creators telling their own stories. He said, “We need Latino writers, Latino directors, Latino producers.” He also said, “We need to kick doors down and we need to get our story out there ‘Cause we’re as interesting as anybody else.” These are his words, not his co-star’s.
The Television Academy’s retrospective
In its retrospective on the 76th Emmys, the Academy’s chair described the evening as one that celebrated firsts, including Colón-Zayas’s first in this category, and linked Leguizamo’s remarks to the continuing push for inclusion. The Academy itself framed inclusion as ongoing work rather than a finished project.

Colón-Zayas received her first nomination in this category for playing Tina Marrero in season two of The Bear. In a Los Angeles Times interview published around the July 2024 nominations announcement, she described learning kitchen knife skills, saying, “I had no idea how sharp those knives were.” The paper also quoted her saying, “I’m no pro at home, but I’m better.”
Those remarks are about preparation for the role and add craft context. They do not explain why the win is historically significant, which rests on the category record above.
In short, the milestone is the first Latina win in a specific comedy category, recorded at the 76th Emmys on September 15, 2024. The representation figures from NHMC describe 2024 submissions and nothing more.
