Linda Ronstadt criticized Donald Trump on September 11, 2024, the night before he held a campaign rally at the Tucson Convention Center’s Linda Ronstadt Music Hall. She said the venue bearing her name was one reason she felt compelled to respond, and her statement condemned his politics and his administration’s family-separation policy. She also said she would vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
What happened before Trump’s Tucson rally
Trump held a campaign rally on September 12, 2024, at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, part of the Tucson Convention Center. Ronstadt posted her statement the previous evening, according to the Arizona Daily Star’s rally coverage. The event was in the past; Ronstadt’s comments were a response to the planned use of the hall, not a reaction after attending the rally.
Why the venue mattered to Ronstadt
The hall carries the name of the Tucson-born singer, and she said that made the rally personal enough to warrant a public response. She objected to Trump bringing what she called a “hate show” to a city with deep Mexican American roots and a tolerant spirit. The description was her political judgment, not a neutral characterization of the event.
What Ronstadt said about Trump
In the statement reproduced by the Arizona Daily Star, Ronstadt wrote: “I don’t just deplore his toxic politics, his hatred of women, immigrants and people of color, his criminality, dishonesty and ignorance — although there’s that.” She also wrote, “There is no forgiving or forgetting the heartbreak he caused.” These were Ronstadt’s opinions and accusations in a sharply worded political statement.

Her criticism of family separation
Ronstadt’s statement focused on migrant families separated while seeking asylum under Trump administration border policies. She said there was “no forgiving or forgetting” the heartbreak caused by family separation and invoked Physicians for Human Rights’ assessment that the practice “met the criteria for torture.” That wording is Ronstadt’s reference to the organization’s assessment as reported by the Arizona Daily Star; it should not be read as an independent finding established by the reporting here.
Her electoral position
Ronstadt said she would vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Her endorsement appeared alongside her condemnation of Trump’s politics and the rally’s location.

Ronstadt’s connection to Tucson and the borderlands
Ronstadt’s comments framed Tucson through its Mexican American roots and the region’s borderland identity. For readers interested in that wider connection, the Arizona Daily Star also referenced her book, Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands, about her life and legacy in the Southwest. The book provides personal and regional context, while the immediate reason for her statement was Trump’s scheduled rally in the hall named for her.
