Linda McMahon’s wheelchair appearances on WWE programming were a scripted part of the McMahon family storyline. The character was written as having suffered a nervous breakdown and become catatonic after Vince McMahon’s on-screen demand for a divorce. The angle built to a payoff at WrestleMania X-Seven in 2001, when Linda rose from the chair and kicked Vince during his match with Shane.
What the wheelchair represented in the story
In the storyline, the wheelchair was a visual shorthand for Linda’s character being withdrawn and unable to act for herself. Vince wheeled her out to segments and used her presence as a way to humiliate her. One account of the arc notes that the chair appeared in scenes where Vince mistreated other women, which made Linda’s silence part of the story’s cruelty rather than a separate subplot.
Because the chair was a prop tied to a character, it did not signal anything about the performer’s health. The storyline portrayed Linda as incapacitated; it did not document a real condition.
Timeline of the angle
| Stage | What happened in the storyline | Source |
|---|---|---|
| December 2000 | Vince publicly announces, “I want a divorce!” This marks the turning point of the family feud. | WWE retrospective, “McMahon-to-man” |
| After the divorce demand | Linda’s character has a nervous breakdown and enters a catatonic state. Vince repeatedly wheels her out to segments. The exact date of the breakdown is not stated in the sources. | Fresh Air Archive account |
| 2001 | At WrestleMania X-Seven, Linda rises from her wheelchair and kicks Vince in the groin while he faces Shane. | WWE retrospectives on “McMahon-to-man” and WrestleMania |
How long the wheelchair angle lasted
The sources do not give an episode count or a precise number of weeks or months. What they do establish is the span: the angle began with the December 2000 divorce demand and ended with the WrestleMania X-Seven payoff in 2001. “For months” is a fair description of that span, but readers should treat it as an approximate duration rather than a documented count of appearances.

The divorce line and what it means
The “I want a divorce!” line is reproduced in a WWE retrospective and is spoken by Vince McMahon in his character’s role. It was a plot event that launched the family conflict, not a statement about a real separation.
What is and is not established
- Established: the wheelchair scenes were scripted, the character was written as having a nervous breakdown and catatonia, and the arc was resolved at WrestleMania X-Seven in 2001.
- Not established: any real injury, disability, diagnosis, or medical treatment involving Linda McMahon.
- Not established: an exact number of episodes or months in which the chair appeared.
The Fresh Air Archive piece summarizes the storyline rather than quoting Linda McMahon or anyone involved in production, so it is best read as context for the plot rather than a first-hand account. The WWE retrospectives supply the dates and the WrestleMania ending.
