He did not announce that he was leaving NBC News. NBC named Tom Llamas as his successor in March 2025, with the handover planned for that summer.
Why did Lester Holt leave the anchor desk?
Holt described the move as a chance to change the kind of journalism he was doing, not to end his NBC career. In a February 24, 2025 note to colleagues published by NBC News, he said he would leave the weeknight anchor role and continue as anchor of Dateline NBC in a full-time capacity. He wrote that he wanted to expand his role on the program and shape episodes around subjects he cared about. Read Holt’s announcement at NBC News.
In a later interview excerpt attributed to Variety and reported by TV Insider, Holt gave more detail about the appeal: he wanted to work on more long-form stories and have room to accept planned Dateline interviews without the demands of a nightly newscast taking priority. He said the decision emerged through conversations with his wife and close confidants rather than a single sudden realization. TV Insider’s account of the interview.
The difference was partly a matter of format and schedule. NBC Nightly News is a daily evening broadcast, with breaking coverage that can displace other commitments. Holt said that stepping away would give him more opportunity to do Dateline hours and reporting he could not pursue as readily while anchoring nightly news. In the interview account, he put the attraction simply: “The big buy-in was to be able to do more of the hours.”

Is Lester Holt leaving NBC?
No. Holt announced that he was leaving the NBC Nightly News anchor role, not NBC. In his note, he said he would continue at NBC as Dateline’s anchor, and NBC described his new assignment as full-time. NBC News leadership likewise characterized the change as a move to Dateline, rather than a departure from the network. NBC News leadership’s update.
Holt said he had “gas in the tank” but wanted to come off the nightly-news job. The sources reporting his announcement and later explanation do not establish that he was fired, pushed out, or leaving NBC altogether.

What the available evidence does—and does not—say
Holt’s own announcement and later interview account explain his stated reason: a full-time Dateline role offered more room for long-form reporting and planned interviews than the nightly anchor schedule. The Associated Press reported that Nightly News averaged about 7 million viewers per week at the time of its February 2025 report; that audience figure is context, not evidence of Holt’s motivation. The sources cited here do not establish ratings, network pressure, health, age, or another outside factor as the cause of his decision.
